Inter Milan Signs Djed Spence for £25.6m from Tottenham

Inter Milan have moved again in the English market, completing the signing of England full-back Djed Spence from Tottenham on a five-year contract.

The Serie A champions are paying around 30m euros (£25.6m) for the 26-year-old, who becomes the second England international to walk through the doors at San Siro this summer after John Stones arrived on a free following the end of his Manchester City deal.

An emotional farewell to Spurs

The move had been effectively sealed hours before the official announcement. Spence took to social media on Saturday to say goodbye to Tottenham supporters, drawing a clear line under his time in north London.

“A special chapter comes to an end,” he wrote, calling his Spurs spell “some journey” and picking out “that night in Bilbao” as a moment he would “carry with me forever”. He thanked staff, team-mates “who've become family” and, above all, the fans, signing off with a nod to the future: “Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.”

That new chapter now runs in black and blue.

From World Cup ever-present to San Siro

Spence arrives in Italy off the back of a demanding season and a major international summer. He featured in all eight of England’s matches at the World Cup, playing a full part as Thomas Tuchel’s side battled their way to a third-place finish.

At club level, he remained heavily involved for Tottenham in 2025-26. The full-back made 44 appearances in all competitions, a figure that underlines his importance to Roberto de Zerbi’s squad over the campaign.

Yet the landscape at Spurs shifted quickly once the season ended. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro committed his future to the club with a new contract in June, while Tottenham strengthened on the opposite flank by bringing in Andy Robertson from Liverpool. With both full-back positions locked down, the path for Spence to remain a guaranteed starter narrowed.

De Zerbi had publicly stated in July that he wanted to convince Spence to stay, but the combination of squad competition and Inter’s concrete interest proved decisive.

A successful Spurs spell and a return to Italy

Spence leaves Tottenham with a substantial body of work behind him. Signed from Middlesbrough in 2022 for an initial £12.5m, he went on to make 85 appearances for the north London club and played his part in one of their standout recent achievements: the 2024-25 Europa League triumph.

That European run, capped by the emotional night in Bilbao he referenced in his farewell, helped raise his profile across the continent and reminded Serie A clubs of his qualities.

Inter will not be a step into the unknown. This is Spence’s second taste of Italian football after a six-month loan spell at Genoa in 2024, an experience that should ease his adaptation to life back in Serie A.

Now, with a long-term contract, a substantial fee and a champion’s jersey waiting for him, Spence arrives at San Siro not as a loanee or a prospect, but as a full-blooded signing expected to help keep Inter on top of Italy – and push them deeper into Europe.
