Inter Faces Challenge as Calhanoglu Misses Udinese Clash

Inter head into Monday night’s Serie A meeting with Udinese without one of their key pillars. Hakan Calhanoglu has been left out of Cristian Chivu’s matchday squad after reporting muscular fatigue, pre-match reports confirm.

The absence is a significant one. Calhanoglu has become the metronome at the base of Inter’s midfield, dictating tempo and offering balance in and out of possession. This time, he doesn’t even make the bench, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting adductor fatigue as the reason for his exclusion.

Inter vs Udinese is one of three fixtures on a busy Monday evening in Serie A, alongside Torino vs Roma and Como vs Parma in the early kick-off slots. Yet it is at San Siro where one of the league’s most reliable midfielders is suddenly missing.

The early indication from Inter’s camp is cautiously positive. This is not believed to be a long-term problem, and the club will monitor Calhanoglu day by day. The clock is already ticking, though. Inter face Roma on Saturday evening, and his availability for that clash is still uncertain.

Midfield Reshuffle

Without their usual holding midfielder, Chivu has had to redraw the lines in the centre of the pitch. Inter will start with a trio of Nicolo Barella, Piotr Zielinski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with Zielinski expected to drop into the deepest role.

It is a different look. Barella’s energy, Mkhitaryan’s intelligence between the lines, and Zielinski’s vision from deep will now have to cover the absence of a specialist regista. For Inter, the hope is simple: that this is a short detour, not the start of a longer problem in the heart of their midfield.
