Idaho Defeats Grand Canyon 1-0 in Early Season Match

MOSCOW, Idaho — One loose touch, one punished mistake, and Grand Canyon’s Pacific Northwest swing opened with a thud inside the turf-lined Kibbie Dome.

Two attack-minded sides walked in with reputations for scoring in bunches. Only one clear chance really mattered.

GCU goalkeeper Emma Knack tried to clear her lines early, but her mis-hit ball dropped straight to Idaho senior forward Calli Chiarelli — the kind of gift strikers replay in their heads for years. Chiarelli steadied herself with a couple of touches and drilled a shot into an almost unguarded net, staking the Vandals to a 1-0 lead before the Lopes had settled.

The scoreboard never changed again.

Lopes shut out, chances vanish

From there, Grand Canyon never truly found its attacking rhythm on the turf. The Lopes finished the night without a single shot on target — just the second time that’s happened under head coach Derek Cissell, a span that stretches back to the program’s breakthrough NCAA Tournament trip at No. 3 USC.

Idaho’s back line and veteran goalkeeper Paula Flores smothered any hint of danger. Flores collected her 22nd career shutout, rarely stretched as GCU’s final ball and finishing touch deserted them.

Defense recovers, but mountain too steep

After the early error, GCU’s defense tightened and gave the attack a chance to respond. Knack recovered well, handling the remaining three shots on frame as the Lopes stayed within striking distance until the final whistle.

Idaho, now 5-1-1, made the early strike stand up and extended its winning run to three. The victory also delivered a bit of payback after last season’s loss to GCU in Phoenix.

Grand Canyon, now 3-2-2, saw its three-match unbeaten streak snapped on a night when one lapse proved fatal.

Eyes on Eastern Washington

The road doesn’t get any easier. Next up is a trip to Cheney on Sunday to face Eastern Washington — a side that opened the season with five straight wins before finally slipping against Wyoming.

This time, GCU will be back on a natural grass surface, chasing a response and a result before a three-match home stand that bleeds into conference play.

One mistake cost them in Moscow. How quickly they learn from it may shape the rest of their season.
