Ibrahima Konaté's Future at Liverpool: Ekitike's Instagram Plea
Hugo Ekitike has stepped into Liverpool’s contract saga with Ibrahima Konaté, and he’s done it in the most modern way possible – with a pointed Instagram comment that speaks the language of the dressing room.
“Sign, brother”
As news grows that Konaté is likely to leave Anfield on a free transfer this summer after contract talks collapsed, Liverpool supporters have flooded the defender’s social media with pleas for him to stay.
Konaté posted a picture of himself arriving on France duty ahead of the World Cup – a tournament he was due to share with Hugo Ekitike before the forward’s serious Achilles injury ruled him out. The replies were quickly overrun by Liverpool fans begging their No.5 to commit his future.
Ekitike joined in. Spotting one message telling Konaté to sign, the Liverpool forward echoed the sentiment in the language they share, replying: “signe frere” with two laughing emojis. Translated, it’s simple and sharp: “sign, brother.”
It was light-hearted. The timing was anything but.
From “big chance I’m here” to the exit door
Only a few weeks ago, Konaté sounded close to an agreement. Speaking at the Hill Dickinson Stadium after helping Liverpool beat Everton, the centre-back projected the calm of a player who expected to stay.
“For sure, there is a big chance I’m here next season,” he said. “This is what I always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract, but when everything is sorted, you will have to ask Richard (Hughes) what I said to him in September, November and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.”
He doubled down on that message, urging reporters to quiz Liverpool’s sporting director once the paperwork was finally done.
“When everything's going to be sorted, I wish you had a discussion with Richard (Hughes) and asked what I said to him a few months ago, before everyone talked about everything. When he’s going to reply, you will see. I just wish that.”
That moment never arrived. The deal was never signed. The expectation now is stark: Konaté is set to walk away as a free agent.
A leader on the brink of leaving
Konaté has not spoken like a man edging towards the exit. Quite the opposite. With Arne Slot preparing to lose several big personalities from his squad this summer, the Frenchman has openly embraced the idea of becoming one of the dressing room’s standard-bearers.
“I think I'm a leader already for this team, for the younger players, and for everyone to be fair,” he said.
He knows the cycle. At a club like Liverpool, icons come, dominate, and eventually move on. The next wave has to step into the void.
“We know this is part of the football life. The legends are going to leave one day and after, it's going to be our turn to take the lead. I started this already and it's a big responsibility.
“We start and we play football to have this kind of chance and to make sure everything is fine for this amazing club. But I need the help of everyone as well.”
Those are not the words of a squad player passing through. They are the words of a defender who sees himself as central to Liverpool’s future.
Five years in red, and a queue forming
Signed from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konaté has spent five years at Anfield, growing from a promising Bundesliga defender into one of Europe’s most imposing centre-backs when fit. His blend of pace, power and front-foot defending made him a natural heir to Liverpool’s recent defensive leaders.
If he does leave on a free, he will not be short of offers. Real Madrid and PSG have already been linked, and a player of his age and pedigree on a free transfer will tempt Europe’s elite.
That is what gives Ekitike’s three-word nudge its edge. It is banter, yes, but it carries the frustration of a fanbase and a squad that know exactly what they stand to lose.
Liverpool have seen legends depart before. The churn never stops. The question now is whether one of their next-generation leaders will be allowed to walk away just as his time to “take the lead” truly arrives.
