Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg Stripped of Marseille Captaincy After Rejecting Newcastle Move

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been stripped of the Marseille captaincy after refusing a move to Newcastle United, triggering a power struggle behind the scenes at the Ligue 1 club.

The Danish midfielder, long viewed as a leader in the dressing room, turned down the chance to join Newcastle, where manager Matthias Jaissle had earmarked him as a direct replacement for Bruno Guimaraes. Newcastle’s sporting director Ross Wilson has been driving the pursuit, and Marseille were prepared to cash in, agreeing to a £15 million deal in principle.

Hojbjerg, though, does not want the move. That stance has infuriated Marseille owner Frank McCourt, and the fallout has landed squarely on the player’s arm – literally.

Armband removed, coach overruled

Hojbjerg started for Marseille against Atletico Madrid yesterday and completed the match, but the captain’s armband was nowhere near him. It went instead to Timothy Weah, a clear signal that the hierarchy had made its call.

Head coach Bruno Genesio did not try to hide his frustration with the decision when he faced the media on Friday.

“It is a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management,” he said. “If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it is not a decision that I agree with.

“But I am an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it.”

The message is stark: the board wants Hojbjerg out, and if he will not go to Newcastle, they will strip back his influence.

Newcastle turn to other targets

For Newcastle, the situation is clear enough. They will not waste time on a player who does not want to come. The club is expected to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements as they plan for life after Guimaraes.

Attention has already swung to Joao Palhinha. The Magpies have put a three-year contract on the table for the Bayern Munich midfielder, hoping his physical presence and Premier League pedigree can anchor their midfield.

Palhinha, though, has his own preference. The Portuguese wants to join Aston Villa instead.

So Newcastle find themselves in a familiar transfer-window bind: one target refusing to leave his current club for them, another angling for a different destination. Marseille, meanwhile, are left with a key player who has lost the armband but not the ball.

How long that uneasy truce can hold will shape not just Hojbjerg’s season, but Marseille’s, and perhaps Newcastle’s midfield rebuild as well.
