Hartlepool Faces Injury Crisis with Merrick and Kouogun Out

Hartlepool United’s early-season momentum has taken a heavy hit, with head coach Darren Clark confirming a double injury setback to key figures Max Merrick and Max Kouogun.

The news is grim. Merrick, the on-loan goalkeeper from Chelsea, faces around six weeks out with a thigh tear, while defender Kouogun is staring at at least two months on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage and could yet require surgery.

Merrick ruled out after Woking injury

Merrick’s injury came in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Woking, a result that briefly masked the seriousness of the situation. The 21-year-old pulled up shortly after the half-hour mark and was forced off, immediately raising alarm bells on the Hartlepool bench.

Clark revealed that Merrick has already returned to Chelsea for treatment.

“Max obviously went straight back down to Chelsea with it being his parent club and the medical facilities they have there,” Clark told BBC Radio Tees. “He’s had a scan.

“We spoke with their medical team - not good news, but probably what we expected. He’s got a thigh tear, so he’ll be out for six weeks.”

Chelsea’s medical department will now oversee the bulk of Merrick’s rehabilitation.

“You can imagine what a top elite European club has in terms of facilities and the attention that they can have in terms of the amount of medical staff that they have as well,” Clark said. “He’ll get the very best of attention there and then when he gets close to that return, he’ll come back up with us. We’re keeping in touch with him every day, making sure that everything’s okay.”

In Merrick’s absence, summer signing Nathan Fisher, who replaced him against Woking, is set to step into the spotlight. The 21-year-old is now in line to start Friday night’s fixture against Kidderminster Harriers (19:45 BST), a significant test of his readiness to handle the No.1 role.

That reshuffle will push player/goalkeeping coach Adam Smith up to second-choice goalkeeper, tightening the depth in a crucial position just as the schedule begins to bite.

Kouogun facing lengthy spell out

If Merrick’s absence hurts, Kouogun’s situation cuts even deeper.

The defender has been sidelined since an awkward landing in the defeat to Eastleigh in August, and the latest scan results have confirmed ligament damage in his ankle.

“Following on from that, we’ve had a scan on Max Kouogun with his ankle issue when he landed in the Eastleigh game, he’s got some kind of ligament damage, so Max will be out for a minimum of two months,” Clark said.

The club now awaits a specialist verdict.

“We’re going to see a consultant to see whether it needs surgery, if that would be the case, that would take up to three months. So that’s a big blow for us because Max is a big player for us in every sense of the word.”

For a side that leans heavily on Kouogun’s presence and physicality at the back, the prospect of being without him potentially until the winter is a serious concern.

Recruitment questions and a test of depth

With Merrick unavailable and the goalkeeping pecking order stretched, Clark is already looking at the market.

He is set for talks with Chris Maxwell, head of football operations at club advisors Bromby & Partners, to explore the possibility of bringing in short-term cover while Merrick recovers.

Any decision will have to balance immediate need with longer-term planning, but the dilemma is clear: trust Fisher and Smith to carry the load, or move quickly to reinforce?

Hartlepool have banked three points against Woking despite the disruption. Now comes the real examination—whether this squad can absorb the loss of two big players and keep their season on track.
