Go Ahead Eagles Held to Draw by FC Groningen

Go Ahead Eagles walked off to applause and frustration in equal measure. A dominant display, a late equaliser, a glaring miss. Only a 1-1 draw to show for it against a spent FC Groningen side in De Adelaarshorst.

For a long time, it looked like Groningen would pull off a classic away smash-and-grab. Against the run of play, they struck first and did it in style. Brynjólfur Willumsson picked up the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a fierce drive. It flew past Kjetil Haug before the goalkeeper could move: 0-1. One chance, one goal, and suddenly the home crowd had a problem to solve.

Go Ahead responded with pressure and purpose. Groningen dropped deeper, lines compressed around their own penalty area, and the match turned into an attack-versus-defence exercise. Søren Tengstedt, buzzing between the lines, looked the most likely to drag the hosts level. He almost did it with a clever lob, only for Etienne Vaessen to stretch and claw the ball away with an outstanding save.

The pattern didn’t change after the break. Joseph Oosting’s side pushed higher, moved the ball quicker, and created chances. Thibo Baeten threatened, Stefan Ingi Sigurdarson found space, but Groningen clung on. Blocks, clearances, time bought with every long ball and delay. The visitors were surviving rather than competing, yet the scoreboard still favoured them.

The pressure finally broke them on 82 minutes. A sharp move cut straight through the middle of Groningen’s tiring lines, and this time Tengstedt did not forgive. He met the chance with conviction and hammered the ball past Vaessen for 1-1. His fifth goal of the season, and with it the current lead in the Eredivisie scoring charts. De Adelaarshorst erupted. The equaliser felt inevitable. A winner suddenly felt possible.

Go Ahead smelled blood. A point was no longer enough. They threw bodies forward, chased every second ball, and forced Groningen even further back towards their own goal. Then came the moment that should have decided it. The ball fell to Sigurdarson in front of an open goal, 2-1 at his feet, the entire stadium already halfway to celebrating. Somehow, he slid it wide. Disbelief in the stands, hands on heads, the chance gone.

When the whistle went, both sides had to accept a draw. Groningen, exhausted and relieved, had emptied the tank. Go Ahead Eagles had done almost everything right, created the better chances, and found their scorer in ruthless form. Yet they walked away with only one point and a lingering question: how did they not win this game?
