Gillingham Faces Setback as Obiero Ruled Out for Two Months

Gillingham’s emphatic 4-1 win at Rochdale came at a heavy price, with manager Gareth Ainsworth confirming that midfielder Zech Obiero faces “a month or two” on the sidelines after damaging both hamstrings on his debut.

The 21-year-old, on loan from Leyton Orient, lasted just 15 minutes of his first appearance before pulling up, abruptly cutting short what was supposed to be a statement start to his Gills career in League Two.

“I think it will be a sustained period on the touchline,” Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent. “Terrible for him to start his Gillingham career that way, but it's football.”

The injury leaves Gillingham counting the cost of a brutal opening month. Obiero is now the club’s third serious casualty already this season, a run that has forced Ainsworth to reshuffle far earlier than planned.

“It's unbelievable, and we've had some freakishly ridiculous injuries,” Ainsworth said. “It's unfortunate, but it does come in threes. Hopefully that's the end of it.”

The frustration is sharpened by how little time Obiero had even spent on the training pitch.

“People can talk about the way we train. He only trained one day, Zech!” Ainsworth added. “So if that's done him in, I'm going to leave this industry.”

Despite the setback, the Gills boss refused to waver in his belief in the young midfielder.

“I’d sign him again tomorrow,” he insisted. “I know exactly what he bring us, but he's a strong boy and he'll come back stronger than ever. We'll have to do without him, and the boys have adapted really well with that.”

Gillingham have started the season with intent on the pitch. The question now is whether their patched-up squad can sustain that momentum while key figures fight their way back from serious injury.
