Cole Palmer’s England return has been cut short before it even began – and his misfortune has opened the door for Morgan Gibbs-White.

The Chelsea forward is set to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad with a minor injury, clearing the way for the Nottingham Forest playmaker to be recalled for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, according to the BBC.

Palmer’s setback halts international resurgence

Palmer had just gone 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another full outing in what has been a strong start to his club season. After a summer on the outside looking in following his World Cup omission, he had responded exactly as Tuchel wanted.

Tuchel had not hidden the challenge in front of him. The injury reshapes Tuchel’s plans and gives Gibbs-White the opening he had narrowly missed out on.

The Forest midfielder, 26, was one of the final names cut when Tuchel announced his original squad. On Friday, the England boss admitted Gibbs-White had been “incredibly close” to making it. Palmer’s withdrawal changes that equation.

Gibbs-White has started the domestic season with purpose: one goal and two assists in five league games, dictating play and driving Forest forward from midfield. His last England outing came in October 2025, a 3-0 friendly win over Wales, and he now has the chance to add to that cap count in a far more demanding setting.

The break finishes back on home soil, with England welcoming the Czechs to Wembley again on 6 October.
