Germany's Defensive Woes Overshadow Leroy Sane's Bright Start in Loss to Ecuador
Germany showed attacking ambition but struggled defensively in their final World Cup group match, losing 2-1 to Ecuador. Julian Nagelsmann’s team scored early through Leroy Sane but conceded twice and couldn’t find a solid response. Despite the defeat, Germany still topped their group but ended on a disappointing note.
Early Lead Follows Fortunate Chance
The match began swiftly for Germany. A fortunate moment came when Alex Pavlovic challenged for a ball and accidentally clipped Ecuador’s Pedro Vite, leaving the ball loose for Florian Wirtz to set up Sane, who finished clinically. Though Ecuador protested, the goal stood.
“When you have such a good start and take the lead, you must focus on space. Today we lost control a bit after scoring,” said Nagelsmann.
Ecuador’s Response and Midfield Battle
Ecuador equalized with a long-range strike from Nilson Angulo, marking their first goal of the tournament. The remainder of the first half saw intense tackling and pressure, but few clear chances. Nagelsmann noted the difficulty in adjusting to Ecuador’s pressing style.
Second Half Breakdown
The second half started with controversy: Germany thought they had a penalty when Kai Havertz went down, but the referee ruled a foul earlier in the build-up. From there, Ecuador took control. Needing a win to progress, they pressed hard with strong crowd support behind them.
Ecuador’s winner came from a header by Kevin Rodriguez, outjumping Jonathan Tah, followed by Gonzalo Plata’s finish past Manuel Neuer. The goal ignited celebrations among Ecuador’s fans and players alike.
“This is about learning to endure and keep faith in tough moments. We remained calm and worked our plan,” said Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece.
Germany pushed to respond but had rotated many starters, and their substitutes lacked creativity despite effort. Nagelsmann admitted they struggled to regain rhythm after halftime.
“Defeat is never good, even when you cannot lose the group lead. We will learn and move forward,” Nagelsmann stated.
