Gabin Bernardeau Joins FC Lorient on Four-Year Deal

Gabin Bernardeau arrived at OGC Nice last summer as a quiet coup from the lower leagues. A free transfer from Le Mans, a France youth international, and a midfielder with end-product: it looked like smart business.

A year on, he is gone.

The 20-year-old has completed a permanent move to FC Lorient, signing a four-year contract with Les Merlus after a season in which he never truly broke into Francesco Farioli’s plans on the Côte d’Azur.

Nice had picked him up after a standout campaign with Le Mans in Ligue 3 (formerly National 1). There, Bernardeau played with the swagger of a player too big for the division: 30 league appearances, three goals, eight assists. Numbers that turn heads, even from the top flight.

That form earned him his shot at the Allianz Riviera. But the step up was brutal. In a squad packed with established options, the young midfielder found only scraps of game time, finishing the season with just eight appearances in all competitions. Glimpses, not a platform.

So he moves on again, this time to a Lorient side about to start a new chapter under Alexandre Dujeux. For Bernardeau, it is a reset and, crucially, a route back to regular football. For Lorient, it is a calculated investment in a profile they hope will grow with them.

The transfer fee remains officially undisclosed, though reports point towards a deal in the region of €1m. For a player signed for nothing 12 months ago, Nice walk away with a tidy profit. Lorient, meanwhile, secure a long-term asset entering the most formative years of his career.

The deal is not a straight line in one direction either. Laurent Abergel has moved the other way, returning to Nice and already unveiled as their new midfield option, a more experienced piece in contrast to Bernardeau’s potential.

One club banks on certainty. The other leans into upside.

Bernardeau now lands in Brittany with minutes to win, a coach to convince, and a reputation from Le Mans to rediscover. If he can reconnect with the player who dominated Ligue 3, this switch may be remembered as the moment his career truly started.
