Fikayo Tomori Linked with Newcastle United Transfer

Newcastle United’s summer rebuild has focused on the gloves and the engine room. The back line, though, still looks light with Liverpool looming on opening weekend and the fixtures about to start flying in. Matthias Jaissle knows it. Everyone at St James’ Park does.

And from Italy, a familiar name keeps circling back into view: Fikayo Tomori.

Tomori back on the radar

The AC Milan centre-back has been linked with a Premier League return for weeks, with Newcastle repeatedly mentioned among the clubs keeping tabs. At the end of July, The Athletic pushed back on talk of concrete Magpies interest, casting doubt on how serious the links really were.

Now the story has flared up again.

Italian outlet Quotidiano Sportivo, via reporter Luca Mignani, and talkSPORT both say Tomori is increasingly likely to leave San Siro before the window shuts, with Milan prepared to listen to offers.

“Now the main suspect in packing his bags is Fikayo Tomori: he was on the bench for the entire match against Chelsea, tied to the club until next June, with no renewal in sight,” Mignani reported.

talkSPORT echoed that stance, stating Milan have “made Fikayo Tomori available for sale ahead of the final weeks of the transfer window,” and noting the defender is heading into his seventh season at San Siro after initially arriving on loan from Chelsea in January 2021.

The optics in preseason only fuel the noise. Tomori sat out Milan’s 3-0 defeat to his former club Chelsea, unused even as new head coach Ruben Amorim shuffled his pack heavily during the game.

Premier League door creaks open

For Newcastle, the key detail in Mignani’s report lies back in England. Several Premier League clubs have already registered interest, he claims, and Newcastle are on that list.

“The Premier League has come knocking (Coventry, Newcastle, Liverpool): now it's time to make a move,” Mignani wrote.

So far, though, there is no suggestion of a formal offer from Tyneside. If there is interest, it remains at the exploratory stage. Liverpool and Coventry City are also name-checked as potential suitors, hinting at a possible three-way tussle if any of them decide to firm things up.

Tomori joined Milan permanently from Chelsea in 2021 for £25 million, around €29 million at the time, after impressing on loan. Since then he has passed the 200-appearance mark for the Rossoneri and played a key role in their Serie A title win.

Now he is entering the final year of his contract. According to Mignani, there is no extension on the horizon. At the same time, Milan are trying to trim a bloated squad that reportedly stands at a huge 44 players. Something has to give, and Tomori is being positioned as one of the saleable assets.

There is, however, one big unknown: the fee. Mignani does not specify Milan’s asking price, leaving any buying club guessing what it might take to tempt them into a deal. Tomori’s estimated market value sits at around €13.3 million, a number that would look more than reasonable for a defender with his experience and pedigree, but valuations and actual demands rarely match cleanly in August.

Right fit for Newcastle’s needs?

Newcastle’s recruitment team have been hunting for defensive help, particularly at full-back, as they try to balance the squad for Jaissle’s first campaign. That raises the obvious question: does a centre-back like Tomori represent smart use of the remaining budget, or a luxury when other areas still need attention?

Tomori brings pace, recovery speed, and top-level experience in both Serie A and the Champions League. He also knows English football from his Chelsea days and would not face the same adaptation curve as a defender coming straight from the continent.

But Newcastle’s shopping list is not endless. Every move now carries weight.

Do they pivot towards a deal for Tomori if Milan’s stance hardens into a sale at the right price? Or hold their nerve, keep their powder dry, and push those resources into a specialist full-back and extra midfield depth as the season closes in?

The window is ticking down. Milan are open for business. The question is whether Newcastle are ready to walk through that door.
