Fermin Lopez Takes Barcelona's Iconic No. 7 Shirt

Fermin Lopez has been handed one of the most charged shirts in football. Barcelona’s new No. 7.

The La Liga registration now makes it official: the 21-year-old La Masia product drops the No. 16 he has worn in recent seasons and steps into the jersey vacated by Ferran Torres, who left for Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth close to €50 million. The Spanish international signed a five-year contract in Paris, running until 2031, and his departure immediately triggered the familiar debate around the Camp Nou: who gets the 7?

Now there’s an answer, and it comes from within.

A La Masia talent takes centre stage

Fermin has become a central pillar in Hansi Flick’s plans. Last season, the attacking midfielder delivered a breakout 2025/26 campaign, helping drive Barcelona to the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. He didn’t just fill gaps; he influenced games, linked attacks, and played with the kind of fearlessness that tends to be rewarded in this club’s history.

His rise hit a cruel bump late in the season. An injury ruled him out of Spain’s World Cup trip to North America, a tournament that looked tailor-made for his energy and timing from midfield. The disappointment was obvious.

He has answered it the only way that really matters: on the pitch. Fully recovered, Fermin has impressed in pre-season, moving with sharpness, demanding the ball, and looking every bit like a player ready to carry extra responsibility. Now he will do it with a number on his back that demands exactly that.

Stepping into a demanding lineage

The No. 7 shirt at Barcelona is no ordinary number. It carries a complicated, glittering, and sometimes turbulent history.

Most recently it belonged to Ferran Torres. Before him came Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann, and Philippe Coutinho — big fees, big expectations, and mixed legacies. Go further back and the names grow heavier: Arda Turan, Pedro Rodriguez, David Villa. Before that, Luis Figo wore it. So did Eusebio. Even Pep Guardiola had a brief spell with the 7.

It is a shirt that has seen icons, lightning rods, and everything in between. For a homegrown midfielder to inherit it at this stage of his career sends a clear message about how the club sees his trajectory.

A wider reshuffle in Barcelona’s dressing room

Fermin’s promotion is part of a broader renumbering at the club after a summer of change.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s exit opened up the No. 1 shirt, now taken by Joan Garcia. Between the posts he will be joined in the goalkeeping group by Wojciech Szczesny, who has been assigned No. 13.

The puzzle is not complete. New arrivals Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon are still waiting for their kit numbers, with more tweaks expected in the coming days as the squad settles.

For now, though, one decision stands out. In a club that has often looked outside for its next star, Barcelona have handed one of their most storied shirts to a La Masia graduate in full flight. The question is no longer whether Fermin Lopez is ready for the spotlight.

It’s how far he can run with that No. 7 on his back.
