Barcelona's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez: A Transfer Saga Unfolds
Barcelona’s chase for Julian Alvarez has turned into one of the most stubborn sagas of the summer – and it is now unsettling life inside Atletico Madrid.
The Catalan club, stripped of Robert Lewandowski and having seen Ferran Torres depart for PSG, are without a natural No. 9. Hansi Flick wants a striker, and Alvarez has been pushed to the top of the list. Barcelona have kept coming, Atletico have kept saying no, and the standoff is starting to bite in Madrid as much as in Catalonia.
A transfer battle turns into a dressing-room problem
According to SPORT, Atletico’s biggest fear is no longer just whether Barcelona will return with another bid. The real concern sits in the dressing room.
Alvarez has made it clear he wants the move to Barcelona. Atletico, for their part, have refused to even open talks. That leaves the club staring at an awkward reality: if they hold their line and block the transfer, they must then bring back into the fold a player who openly wanted out.
Inside the Metropolitano, the question is blunt. What kind of Alvarez will they get if he stays?
The hierarchy worry the saga could drag on his mood and seep into his performances across the season. For a player they see as central to their project, that is a serious risk.
Miguel Angel Gil Marin has gone public with a hard-line message, insisting Alvarez would not be sold “even for €200 million”. Atletico continue to frame the 26-year-old as non-negotiable, a cornerstone of their plans.
But everyone in football knows the danger of an unhappy striker. Goals dry up. Energy dips. The crowd senses it.
Simeone caught in the middle
Diego Simeone does not control the transfer market, but he will have to live with whatever decision the club makes.
The calendar offers him no breathing space. Atletico open their La Liga campaign against Malaga on Wednesday, and Simeone must quickly decide how to handle his unsettled forward.
Does Alvarez walk straight back into competitive action? Does he start on the bench? Or does Simeone leave him out entirely until the dust settles?
The first clue will come with the squad list on 19 August. If Alvarez’s name is there, the spotlight will immediately swing to his minutes on the pitch – and to the reaction inside the Metropolitano.
How will the fans greet a player who has pushed to join Barcelona? Whistles or applause could shape the tone of his entire season.
Barcelona running out of time
On the other side of the equation, Barcelona cannot simply sit and wait for Atletico to crack.
They need a striker now. With Lewandowski gone and Torres in Paris, Flick’s squad is glaringly short of a natural finisher, and the start of the season is closing in.
Alvarez is the preferred option, but Barcelona cannot force Atletico to the table. They can only keep the pressure on and monitor every twist in the story, hoping the player’s stance and the club’s unease eventually open a door.
At the same time, they have to move. The Catalans have already been linked with Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres, though that idea was quickly cooled by Fabrizio Romano, who downplayed any concrete move.
So Barcelona walk a tightrope: stay close enough to pounce if Atletico soften, while actively searching for alternatives in case they do not.
The window still has weeks left. Atletico’s resolve is clear. Alvarez’s desire is, too. Somewhere between those two positions, a season-defining decision is waiting to be made.
