Fenerbahce Denies Rumors on Chelsea Winger Jamie Gittens
Fenerbahce have moved quickly and aggressively to shut down talk that they are chasing Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, issuing a strongly worded statement to denounce the speculation as “completely unfounded”.
The 22-year-old had been linked with a surprise switch to Istanbul just a year after his big-money move to Stamford Bridge, with social media chatter suggesting the Turkish giants were lining up a deal this summer.
The story gathered pace online. Fenerbahce clearly had seen enough.
Fenerbahce hit back
“Reports circulating in some media outlets today regarding our club's interest in Chelsea FC player Jamie Gittens are completely unfounded and do not reflect the truth,” the club declared on Saturday.
The tone hardened from there.
“We once again clearly state that attempts to manipulate Fenerbahçe Sports Club through false transfer claims and artificially created agendas will have no effect.
“Fenerbahçe conducts its sporting structure, transfer policy, and future planning in all branches, especially football, in accordance with its own strategy, needs, and established programs.
“Therefore, we expect this approach of using our club's name to create public opinion and steer Fenerbahçe towards certain directions to cease.
“Our sole focus right now is our match against Gençlerbirliği in the first week of the Trendyol Super League.
“We respectfully request that our great Fenerbahçe fans disregard such unfounded news and continue their support for our teams only by considering the statements made through our club's official channels.”
No ambiguity. No hint of a chase. Just a flat rejection and a reminder that their attention is on the league opener, not on a Premier League winger.
Gittens at Chelsea: stop-start and under scrutiny
For Gittens, the noise around his future comes after a difficult first season in England.
Chelsea paid a total fee of £51.5million to bring him in from Borussia Dortmund, a statement signing for a player expected to explode in the Premier League. Instead, his debut campaign stalled.
Across 27 appearances in all competitions, he managed one goal and five assists. Flashes of quality, but nowhere near the numbers expected from such an investment.
Injury cut deep into his rhythm. A hamstring problem sidelined him for more than 100 days and forced him to miss 22 games. His last competitive outing for Chelsea came on January 31, a stark reminder of how long he spent watching from the stands while the season moved on without him.
Alonso’s call to make
The arrival of Xabi Alonso has reset plenty at Stamford Bridge, and Gittens sits firmly in that category of “decision to be made”.
On the evidence so far, the new manager is at least willing to give him a platform. Alonso has used Gittens in five of Chelsea’s six pre-season friendlies, and the winger has responded with one goal and one assist under the Spaniard.
It’s not a revolution, but it is a response. A hint that he can still carve out a role in a crowded attacking unit.
With Fenerbahce publicly slamming the door on any suggestion of a move, the focus swings back to London. Gittens now looks far more likely to be involved when Chelsea open their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24.
A year ago, he arrived as a £51.5m promise. Now, with the Turkish escape route emphatically dismissed, he faces a more demanding challenge: proving to Alonso and Chelsea’s supporters that his story at Stamford Bridge is only just beginning.
