Daniel Farke Confirms Joe Rodon Out for Up to 10 Weeks

Leeds United’s early-season optimism has taken a heavy hit. Daniel Farke has confirmed that key centre-back Joe Rodon faces at least eight to 10 weeks on the sidelines with a serious hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old pulled up during the first half of Sunday’s draw with Brentford, immediately signalling trouble as he limped off in clear pain. Any hope of a minor issue vanished when Farke faced the media before Saturday’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion.

“Bad news with him,” the Leeds manager admitted. “(He has a) serious hamstring injury and will be out for eight to 10 weeks, so he will definitely not play before the next international break. Also, probably not the first games after the international break. Of course, it’s a big blow for us because he’s a key player, but it’s football and sometimes you have to deal with injuries.”

Key pillar ripped out of Leeds backline

This is not just any absentee. Rodon has grown into a cornerstone of Farke’s side since arriving in 2023, anchoring the defence with authority and consistency. He underlined his long-term commitment by signing a new four-year deal in August, a move that felt like a statement of intent for a Leeds team intent on building something stable.

His numbers tell the story of that importance. The Wales international has already racked up 139 appearances for the club across all competitions, chipping in with three goals but, more importantly, providing the kind of reliability managers build game plans around.

Now Farke must rip up that script and improvise.

Momentum checked just as Leeds found their stride

The timing could hardly be worse. Leeds had started the campaign with a sense of control and purpose. A gritty 1-0 win away at Nottingham Forest set the tone, followed by a 1-1 draw against Brentford at Elland Road that might easily have yielded more. They also booked their place in the Carabao Cup third round with another victory over Forest, hinting at depth and resilience.

Rodon’s injury slices into that rhythm. The defensive unit, settled and secure, suddenly needs reshaping. Partnerships must be rebuilt on the fly, just as the fixtures begin to pile up and the margins tighten.

Transfer window work under the microscope

The blow comes days after the transfer window closed, leaving Leeds to face the coming stretch with what they have. Farke and the club moved late to bring in Melvin Bard at left-back and winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya, strengthening two key areas and nudging the squad closer to his vision.

Asked to weigh up the club’s business, Farke offered a largely positive verdict, tempered by realism.

“Not all the wishes are always completely fulfilled, but I would say 90, 95 per cent of what we wanted to do is really good. We also need a bit of luck in the offence, perhaps there are no injuries to some key players,” he said.

Now that hope for luck will have to stretch to the heart of his defence as well.

Brutal schedule, big questions

There is no gentle bedding-in period without Rodon. Leeds head to Brighton on Saturday, a test of their defensive reshuffle against a side that can punish any hesitation. Then comes a trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round on September 9, a tie that will demand both rotation and resilience. Four days later, Newcastle United arrive at Elland Road on September 14, bringing pace, power and a far sterner attacking threat.

Three games, three different challenges, all without their defensive leader.

Farke has framed Rodon’s absence as part of football’s unforgiving reality. The next few weeks will reveal whether Leeds have the depth, organisation and nerve to live with that reality—or whether this injury becomes the moment their promising start begins to fray.
