Enzo Fernandez Faces Rotation Ahead of Porto Clash

Enzo Maresca looks ready to shuffle his pack.

With a Champions League trip to Porto on Tuesday and a Manchester derby looming on the horizon, the Manchester City head coach is expected to lean hard on the depth that has been carefully assembled around him – and that could mean a step back, at least for now, for £125m midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez faces early reality check

Fernandez was not meant to start against Coventry City at the weekend. The plan had been a gentler introduction, a place on the bench, a controlled debut later in the game. That changed in an instant.

Nico O'Reilly pulled up with a back problem in the warm-up, and suddenly Fernandez was thrown into the starting XI for his full debut, lining up alongside Elliot Anderson in the middle of the park. He lasted 76 minutes, a solid first outing, but the schedule is unforgiving.

With only three days between Coventry and Porto, and with United waiting after that, Maresca has little reason to run his new signing into the ground. A rotation call here is not a demotion in status, but it could still mean Fernandez watches the opening whistle from the sidelines this time.

Bouaddi ready for the big stage

If Fernandez steps aside, Ayyoub Bouaddi is poised to step in.

The young midfielder has already felt the weight and noise of Champions League nights from his time at Lille. He knows what it takes to survive in that kind of environment, and Maresca will not hesitate to tap into that experience at the Estadio do Dragao.

Bouaddi’s inclusion would be one of up to four changes from the side that faced Coventry. It fits the pattern: protect key legs, inject energy, and keep the rhythm of a squad that expects to be playing every three days deep into the season.

Foden pushing to start, Ndiaye cramp eases fears

There was another debut to manage at the weekend. Iliman Ndiaye’s first outing ended in the 87th minute, the forward forced off with cramp. No drama, no long-term concern, but a reminder of how quickly the physical toll can bite.

Ndiaye is expected to be available for Porto, yet he may still find himself edged out of the XI by a fully-fit Phil Foden. If Foden is ready to start, it is the kind of attacking upgrade Maresca will be tempted to make in a game where control and incision will both be demanded.

Jeremy Doku, meanwhile, remains sidelined with a calf problem, removing one of City’s most direct threats from the equation and making Foden’s sharpness even more valuable.

Fresh legs at full-back

The changes are unlikely to stop in midfield and attack.

Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol filled the full-back roles against Coventry, but Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri are waiting in reserve and should offer exactly what Maresca craves: fresh legs, aggressive running, and the ability to cope with Porto’s wide threats, including William Gomes and the enduring presence of Pepe.

The rotation here is tactical as much as physical. City will want their full-backs to step into midfield, press high, and still have the legs to recover. Spreading that load across the squad is non-negotiable in a season like this.

All of that points towards a reshaped, but still formidable, City side in Portugal. A possible starting XI:
