O'Reilly, Guéhi, and Anderson Propel England into World Cup Quarter-Finals

England Edges Past Mexico in Azteca Thriller

The Three Lions overcame co-hosts Mexico in a five-goal clash at the Azteca Stadium. Kick-off faced a one-hour delay, and England had to battle the altitude disadvantage, making this an intense match for Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Early on, Raul Jimenez tested goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but the English keeper held firm. Mexico had not conceded any goals so far in the tournament until Jude Bellingham struck twice within 98 seconds during the first half, giving England a strong lead.

The Azteca fell silent before Julian Quinones pulled a goal back for the hosts just before halftime.

England pushed hard for a third goal. Nico O’Reilly hit the post, and then Jarell Quansah received a straight red card in the 54th minute after a sliding challenge. Minutes later, Anthony Gordon was fouled by the Mexican goalkeeper, leading to a penalty that Harry Kane converted confidently.

The referee awarded Mexico a penalty soon after, which Jimenez converted past Pickford.

Despite being down to ten men, Tuchel’s side showed resilience and defensive grit to secure a 3-2 victory.

Next Up: Norway

This win sets up a quarter-final clash between England, featuring Marc Guéhi, Nico O’Reilly, and Elliot Anderson, against Erling Haaland’s Norway.
