England's Path in the 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage and Potential Final Opponents
England's Position in the 2026 World Cup Knockout Bracket
England remain unbeaten and have advanced to the last-16 of the 2026 World Cup. Managed by Thomas Tuchel, the team topped their group after wins against Croatia and Panama, before edging past DR Congo in the Round of 32.
The Three Lions faced some early difficulties against DR Congo, falling behind, but captain Harry Kane delivered two spectacular goals to complete a comeback victory.
Upcoming Fixtures and Challenging Route
England are now set to play Mexico in the Round of 16, with the match scheduled for July 5 at 1am UK time at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Mexico reached this stage undefeated, having defeated Ecuador 2-0.
Should England progress, they could face either five-time champions Brazil or Norway in the quarter-finals on July 11 at 10pm GMT in Miami. Brazil secured their spot by coming from behind to beat Japan 2-1, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli. Norway also advanced after Erling Haaland scored late to secure a 1-0 win over Ivory Coast.
If the Three Lions make it through the quarters, a semi-final clash against defending champions Argentina or Colombia awaits on July 15 at 8pm UK time. Other teams on this side of the bracket include Cape Verde, Australia, Egypt, Switzerland, Algeria, and Ghana.
The final, planned for July 19 at MetLife Stadium at 8pm UK time, would likely see England facing a team from the top half of the tournament bracket. This includes heavyweights such as France, Spain, Portugal, USA, and Morocco.

Tuchel on England’s Progress
“If everyone got what they like, we get an early goal, another goal, an easy afternoon. You have to deal with each situation that comes. They got a very early goal. After the water break, we had four or five opportunities. The penalty situation didn’t go in our favour. We kept knocking, knocking and knocking. The reaction and belief is one of a kind. We found a way to win. Well deserved. Like I said the whole tournament, the energy and team spirit is at the highest level. Everyone understands which part of the tournament we are in at the moment. The players who don’t play keep pushing and pushing, they are positive in the water breaks. Everyone is comfortable when they play, everyone is comfortable when they finish the game. We want it easy and have the first goal. If you have it and come back from one goal down, these are the experiences that give you genuine belief. They are well aware of what they did and what it took today.”
