Eli Junior Kroupi: Bournemouth Star Shortlisted for Ballon d'Or Young Talent

Joe Partington says Eli Junior Kroupi has finally been given the “rightful recognition” his rise deserves after the Bournemouth forward was shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d'Or Men's Young Talent of the Year award.

Kroupi, just 20 and currently sidelined with a broken foot, hit 13 goals in 35 games in all competitions last season, a breakout campaign that has now been noticed on the biggest individual stage in the sport.

Speaking on BBC Radio Solent’s Cherries Unpicked podcast, former Bournemouth defender Partington could barely hide his amazement.

“It is just mad, isn't it?” he said. “We've had some exceptionally talented young players at this football club, but never one who has been involved in the Golden Boy award at the Ballon d'Or.”

For Bournemouth, the nomination underlines both Kroupi’s impact and the void his injury has left. The team have been forced to cope without their most unpredictable attacking spark, and it shows.

“Eli Junior Kroupi did perform exceptionally well last season. Bournemouth really are missing him at the moment, there is a big hole in the team,” Partington said. “They are missing him being a slight maverick, being a bit more creative and being able to take risks.”

The Cherries’ play has tightened up without him. Safe. Controlled. Perhaps too controlled.

“Bournemouth feel a bit safe in their playing style at the moment,” Partington added. “He is a bums-off-seats kind of player. When he gets the ball in and around the box, people expect him to beat the goalkeeper or hit the target.”

The Ballon d'Or shortlist places Kroupi among the 10 most highly rated young players in the world game. That in itself, Partington feels, is a landmark moment for the club and a nod to the work going on behind the scenes.

“It is rightful recognition for him to be included in those top 10 best young players in the word,” he said. “Will he win the award? I would say the likelihood is probably not, but it is great confirmation Bournemouth's recruitment team continue to hit the mark.”

Now the focus is on recovery. Kroupi’s broken foot has halted his momentum, but not the belief around him.

“Hopefully he is able to overcome this foot injury now and recapture the form that put him in this position in the first place,” Partington said.

If he does, Bournemouth may not just have a nominee on their hands, but a young star capable of dragging them to a different level.
