Donald Trump Faces Boos and Awkward Moments at 2026 World Cup Final
Trump’s Troubling Day at the World Cup Final
United States President Donald Trump was hard to miss during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, especially at the final match between Spain and Argentina on Sunday afternoon. Yet, things did not unfold as he might have hoped. Multiple boos from the crowd, an uncomfortable trophy ceremony, and lingering tensions with Spain made the day more humiliating than triumphant for him.
Repeated Boos from the Crowd
Trump probably expected a warm welcome, but that was far from reality. His first encounter with boos came during the United States National Anthem. Fans respected the anthem itself, but when Trump’s image appeared on the stadium’s video board near the end, the audience responded with loud jeers.
The boos only intensified later. As Trump walked across the field for the post-match ceremony, many spectators from both Argentina and Spain directed harsh jeers his way, captured in numerous fan videos. The reception was clearly unfriendly.
An Uncomfortable Trophy Presentation
Last month, it was confirmed that Trump would present the World Cup trophy to the champions after the final. This echoed a similarly awkward incident last year when he interrupted Chelsea’s Club World Cup celebration and refused to step aside.
On Sunday, history repeated itself. After handing the trophy to Spain and congratulating several players, Trump lingered on stage instead of leaving the spotlight. FIFA President Gianni Infantino attempted to gently usher him off, but Trump remained, awkwardly smiling beside the team. The tension was palpable, and one Australian broadcaster remarked that Trump would likely be edited out of the footage.
Recent Criticism of Spain Casts Shadow
The situation grew more awkward considering Trump’s harsh words about Spain only days earlier. During a July 8 news conference, he described Spain as “a wasted cause” and criticized the country for its NATO contributions. He called for cutting off all trade and visits, labeling Spain as “hopeless” and its people “bad.”
"Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain." – Donald Trump
Though his complaints targeted political leaders rather than the soccer team, handing over the trophy to Spain must have been a bitter moment. Smiling through the ceremony, Trump concealed what had to be a challenging contradiction.
