Dominik Szoboszlai Signs New Five-Year Contract with Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai leant back in his chair at Kirkby and tried to rank the moments that have shaped his life. Signing for Liverpool. The birth of his child. And now this.

A new five-year contract. A commitment that will take him to 30 at Anfield. A statement, from player and club, that the story is only just getting started.

A core piece locked in

Liverpool have moved to tie down one of their modern centrepieces after months of talks that never truly felt in doubt, but needed a final push. Those discussions accelerated in recent weeks, and ended with Szoboszlai putting pen to paper on a deal that reflects his rising status.

He has earned it. Last season the Hungarian drove Liverpool’s midfield with the energy and incision that first persuaded the club to trigger his £60m release clause at RB Leipzig in 2023. Thirteen goals, 12 assists, and a willingness to play wherever he was asked turned a big signing into a central pillar of a title-winning side.

He was influential again as Liverpool reclaimed the Premier League in 2024-25, a campaign that confirmed his value not just as a creator but as a leader in waiting.

For Szoboszlai, this was never simply a pay rise. It was a declaration of intent.

"It's maybe my biggest day," he told the club’s website. In his private ranking, only the day he first signed for Liverpool and the arrival of his baby come close. For his football career, he put this firmly in his top three. He spoke of being “very happy” and of not being able to wait “to go again and again and again”.

The hunger sounded genuine, and familiar.

Never enough

Szoboszlai has long carried himself like a player chasing the next level, even when the numbers say he is already there. That mindset, he insists, is why he has reached this point.

"There's always more to come. I'm never happy," he said. Happy with his progress, yes, but convinced he can do better. That restlessness, he explained, has followed him since childhood: it was never enough then, and it is not enough now.

Liverpool have seen that attitude up close. It is what made him such a natural fit in a side that demands running, risk and responsibility from its midfielders. It is also why the club were keen to remove any doubt about his future as they shape the next version of this team.

At 23 when he arrived, Szoboszlai was a signing for the present and the future. Now, with his peak years ahead, Liverpool are betting that the midfielder who helped drive them to the league title can be the one who drags them back to the summit of Europe.

Eyes on Europe

Szoboszlai has never hidden his ambition. When he first walked through the doors at Anfield, he talked about winning everything. The message has not softened with time or success.

"I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can," he said. The targets remain unchanged: every domestic trophy on offer, and one glaring prize still missing from his Liverpool story.

"Let's say the Champions League," he added, almost casually, as if it were just another item on the to-do list rather than the most coveted trophy in club football. “I'm ready to go for it.”

Liverpool will expect nothing less. They have secured a midfielder entering his prime, one already proven in the Premier League and still convinced there is another gear to find.

The contract is signed. The promise is clear. The question now is whether Szoboszlai can turn this commitment into the era-defining European nights he so clearly craves.
