Diego Simeone's Stance on Julian Alvarez's Future
Diego Simeone has drawn a hard line.
The Atletico Madrid boss confirmed he will leave star striker Julian Alvarez on the bench for Wednesday’s LaLiga opener, with the forward locked in a stand-off over his future. Alvarez is pushing for a move to Barcelona this summer, and reports in Spain suggest the Catalan club are now in pole position to land him despite serious interest from Premier League champions Arsenal.
Atletico, though, are refusing to blink. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has made the club’s stance brutally clear, insisting they would not even accept €200m for the former Manchester City forward. For now, Alvarez sits, waits and watches while one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas rumbles on without resolution.
City’s midfield shake-up gets expensive
Up in Manchester, City’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez has just become a lot more complicated. The champions remain keen on the Chelsea midfielder despite missing the London club’s Friday deadline for offers. That delay comes at a cost: City now face paying significantly more than the £120m Chelsea were demanding only last week.
The numbers elsewhere in their midfield rebuild are just as eye-catching. City are set to sign 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi for £85m after agreeing to sell Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to Barcelona in a deal worth up to £65m. One generational anchor out, a teenage prospect in, and a world-record-style fee likely needed for Fernandez. Pep Guardiola’s midfield, once the most settled department in Europe, suddenly looks like the most expensive jigsaw in the game.
United shut the door on Fernandes
Across town, Manchester United are bracing for – and ready to dismiss – an audacious move from Galatasaray for captain Bruno Fernandes. The Turkish giants are determined to land a marquee name this summer and have been piecing together a financial package that would have doubled the 31-year-old’s salary.
United’s response is simple: not for sale. No figure, no sweetener, no wage explosion is expected to shift their position. In a window where almost every star seems to have a price, Fernandes remains one of the few United are unwilling to even place in the shop window.
Liverpool cool on Mbaye but stay alive on Barcola
On Merseyside, Liverpool’s attacking plans have taken a subtle but important turn. The club had reportedly agreed terms with Paris Saint-Germain forward Ibrahim Mbaye, but fresh reports now suggest they are moving away from the 18-year-old.
Their focus at PSG has not disappeared, though. Interest in teammate Bradley Barcola remains strong. Both Mbaye and France international Barcola were left out of PSG’s squad for the French Super Cup on Sunday, a decision that only fuels speculation around their futures.
PSG, European champions and in no mood to be lowballed, were prepared to demand £145m for Barcola, who is also on Arsenal’s radar. Liverpool, however, are prepared to wait it out, confident that patience might drag that price down.
The window still has time to run. With stars benched, captains ring-fenced and teenagers carrying nine-figure expectations, the real drama may only just be starting.
