Devoy Leads Ireland Against Canada in Montreal Friendly

The League of Ireland is back on the senior international stage tonight, and it arrives wearing the captain’s armband.

Bohemians midfielder Dawson Devoy, fresh from domestic duty and unused in last Thursday’s win over Qatar, steps straight into the Republic of Ireland XI in Montreal and takes the captaincy for the friendly against World Cup co-hosts Canada. He partners Conor Coventry in central midfield at Saputo Stadium, a notable elevation for a player still plying his trade at home.

Devoy’s inclusion carries a slice of history. At 24, he becomes the first current League of Ireland player to feature for the senior side since Jack Byrne did so in November 2020. This is not just a debut; it is a statement about the pathway from the domestic league to the national team.

Around him, Heimir Hallgrimsson has ripped up last week’s teamsheet and gone again. Six changes from the Qatar victory, many of them bold. Many of them young.

Eighteen-year-old Benfica winger Jaden Umeh, who only dipped his toes into senior international waters as a second-half substitute in that game, is thrown a starting jersey here. He lines up in a support role, working off the flanks with Chiedozie Ogbene, buzzing around behind centre forward Troy Parrott. It is a front three built for movement, for pressing, for asking questions of a Canadian backline that expects to dominate on home soil.

Behind them, Corrie Ndaba is rewarded for his own first senior appearance against Qatar with a start at left wing-back. He slots into a five-man defensive unit that includes captain on the night Nathan Collins, Séamus Coleman, Jake O'Brien and James Abankwah. For Abankwah, this is cap number four, another step in a quietly accelerating international education.

In goal, Mark Travers gets the nod. Regular number one Caoimhín Kelleher is one of several players excused after the Qatar game, Hallgrimsson choosing to spread minutes and test depth in a demanding window.

The kick-off time tells its own story about the commitment required: 12.45am Irish time. A late-night window into Ireland’s future, against a Canada side with serious pedigree and serious firepower.

Canada start with Maxime Crepeau in goal, protected by a back line of Alistair Johnston, Luc de Fougerolles, Derek Cornelius and Richie Laryea. In midfield, captain Stephen Eustaquio anchors alongside Ismael Kone, with Tajon Buchanan and Liam Millar offering width and incision. Up front, the threat is unmistakable: Jonathan David and Cyle Larin lead the line.

For Ireland, this is a friendly in name only. With Devoy wearing the armband, Umeh trusted from the off, and a reshaped spine braced for a North American test, it feels more like an audition for what comes next.
