Hull City Sets New Transfer Record with Nobel Mendy Signing

Hull City have torn up their transfer history to land Nobel Mendy, signing the highly rated defender from Rayo Vallecano for a club-record fee.

The 21-year-old centre-back has agreed a five-year deal at the MKM Stadium, with the option of a further year, as the club doubles down on its Premier League ambition.

The fee remains officially undisclosed, but Hull confirmed it eclipses the £20m plus add-ons they paid Olympiacos earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. That landmark deal had only just overtaken the £13m spent on Ryan Mason from Tottenham back in 2016. Now there is a new benchmark.

Mendy arrives with the confidence and clarity of a player who knows exactly what he is walking into.

"I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well," the Senegal international said. "I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

"I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it."

This is not a raw project signing. Mendy comes off a standout season in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano, where he scored twice in 28 appearances and pushed his way into the European spotlight. His final game for the Spanish club came on the biggest stage of their campaign – the Conference League final, where they lost to Crystal Palace.

That defeat was a familiar feeling. The season before, Mendy had also reached the Conference League final with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea. Two consecutive European finals, two near-misses, but a clear sign of a player trusted on major nights.

Before Spain, Mendy came through at Paris FC, building the base of the athletic, front-foot defender Hull now believe can anchor their back line for years. His progress earned him a first Senegal cap in March, when he featured against The Gambia.

Hull have already signalled their intent with the arrival of Tzolakis. Now they have doubled down with a record outlay on a centre-back who talks about defending with the same enthusiasm others reserve for scoring goals.

A new spine is taking shape on Humberside. The question now is how far this investment can carry them in the Premier League.
