Derby County's Jacob Widell Zetterstrom Faces Two-Month Injury Layoff

Derby County’s season has taken another painful twist, with first-choice goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom ruled out for up to two months after suffering a knee injury.

The 28-year-old was hurt in the second half of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Birmingham City. For a moment it looked as if he would have to come off, but he stayed on, finished the game and tried to play through the pain. The real damage only became clear afterwards.

Scans have now forced a change of plan. Zetterstrom has withdrawn from the Sweden squad for their four upcoming Nations League group fixtures against Romania, Poland and Bosnia-Herzegovina in late September and early October. Instead of preparing for international football, he will be starting rehab.

The prognosis is grim for Derby. Zetterstrom is not expected back until mid-November, a spell that could see him miss as many as eight Championship matches for a Rams side already scraping the bottom of their squad depth.

Injury crisis deepens

The blow to their World Cup goalkeeper did not come in isolation. Before Zetterstrom went down against Birmingham, Henrik Meister had already left the pitch on a stretcher after a head injury, another worrying sight on a bruising afternoon.

Both now join a packed treatment room. Matt Clarke, Derry Murkin, Filip Bilbija, Rhian Brewster, Craig Forsyth and Lewis Travis are already sidelined, leaving Derby’s options stretched thin across the pitch. For a team battling near the wrong end of the table, the timing could hardly be worse.

Zetterstrom’s absence carries extra sting. Derby did well to keep him in the summer after his World Cup performances attracted strong transfer interest, and he has been one of the few steadying influences in a turbulent start to the campaign.

Vickers’ moment arrives

With Zetterstrom out, the gloves are set to pass to Josh Vickers. The understudy has been named on the bench in every league game this season but has had to wait for his chance. Now it arrives in daunting circumstances, with Derby desperate for points and leadership from the back.
