Davide Frattesi Returns to Lazio: A New Chapter Begins

Davide Frattesi is home. Officially, this time.

Lazio have unveiled the 24-year-old as their new midfielder, completing a move that closes the circle on a boy from Giustiniana who used to train on these very streets and now returns with a very different weight on his shoulders.

The deal itself underlines how much they believe in him. The Biancocelesti have taken Frattesi on a paid loan worth €5 million, with an option to buy set at €10 million and further performance-related bonuses. Inter, unwilling to completely cut the cord with a player they still rate highly, have secured a 50% sell-on clause on any future capital gain from his next transfer.

A bureaucratic delay had briefly stalled the move, stretching out the final hours of negotiation. For Frattesi, those days dragged.

“I’ve experienced it well. When days like this happen, you go back and forth, but it was a wait experienced with desire. It was tiring, but beautiful: it was worth it,” he told the club’s official channels, letting a hint of relief seep through the words.

Then came the drive back through familiar territory. The return wasn’t just professional; it was personal.

“When I arrived, I recognized the paths I took as a child, when I trained at Giustiniana. I'm returning with a different sense of responsibility and greater maturity. I think the time has come to take on important responsibilities, and I'm very happy to do so.”

That line is the crux of this move. At Inter, Frattesi delivered flashes of what he can be – late runs, energy, goals from midfield – but rarely from the start. The competition at San Siro was fierce, minutes were rationed, and yet he still carved out a bond with the Nerazzurri supporters.

“Even at Inter I had established a good relationship with the fans, despite playing little. There were ups and downs, but we always got along,” he said. The affection was there. The status wasn’t.

Lazio offered what he craved: centrality. A role, not a rotation.

“This involvement from the Lazio fans has pleased me very much. I needed to feel at the center of a project again: this welcome charges me a lot,” he admitted. That sense of being needed, not just wanted, tipped the balance.

For Gennaro Gattuso, he is a key piece in a new-look midfield – a runner with bite, capable of pressing, breaking lines, and chipping in at both ends of the pitch. For Frattesi, it is something else too: a step into a harsher spotlight. Coming back to Rome as a full Italy international carries a different scrutiny from media and fans alike. He knows it. He is leaning into it.

“I return with a different responsibility and with greater maturity. I think the time has come for me to take on important responsibilities and I do so very willingly,” he repeated, almost as if setting his own standard in public.

This was not a bolt-from-the-blue transfer. The midfielder revealed that the clubs had already danced around a deal earlier in the year.

“We had been quite close in January, then for a series of reasons we were unable to close. This time they informed me a couple of days ago: there was only time to decide and settle the papers. I didn't have many doubts,” he said.

So the move finally happens in August, on the eve of a new Serie A campaign, with Frattesi walking back into his city as a different player and a different man. Lazio gain a dynamic presence in the heart of the pitch, someone who can run, tackle, and arrive in the box with purpose.

Now it’s simple. The paperwork is done, the shirt unveiled, the paths of his childhood retraced. The next step is proving he can own this midfield, and with it, a new chapter of his career.
