David Raya's Incredible Save Earns Premier League Nomination
David Raya’s flying fingertip stop against Brighton & Hove Albion has earned him a place on the shortlist for the Premier League’s Save of the Season award, capping a campaign in which he has already walked away with the Golden Glove.
The moment that put him there came in December, in a tight 2-1 win at home to the Seagulls. Brighton were pushing, the game tilting, when Yankubah Minteh cut inside and shaped a curling effort that seemed made for the top left corner. Raya read it early, exploded to his right and, at full stretch, managed to flick the ball away with the very end of his right hand. A touch as light as it was decisive.
That intervention not only preserved the points, it also landed him December’s Premier League Save of the Month award. It was his third such prize, pulling him level at the top of the all-time monthly leaderboard alongside Andre Onana and Jordan Pickford.
Now comes the season’s grander verdict. Raya’s stop will be weighed against efforts from James Trafford, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Martin Dubravka, Pickford, Alphonse Areola, Aaron Ramsdale, Karl Darlow and Antonin Kinsky.
The competition is fierce. The standard is elite. But in a season defined by fine margins, Raya’s outstretched glove may yet be the image that lingers longest.
