At around 5.15am on Sunday, Maldini’s Porsche Carrera collided with another vehicle in the city. The crash left six people with minor injuries, among them Maldini himself. He was taken to hospital for checks and discharged later the same day.

What happened next turned a traffic accident into a national story.

Local police, speaking to Reuters, said two breath tests carried out at the scene showed blood alcohol levels of 0.91 grams per litre and 0.89 grams per litre. Italy’s legal limit is 0.5. Maldini was, by those readings, close to twice the permitted level.

His driving licence was suspended on the spot. Police also ordered a drug test.

On Monday, Cagliari moved to clarify one part of the picture, announcing that an initial drug screening had come back completely negative and that Maldini would return to training as normal while the team prepares for its next fixtures.

An Italian security source cited by Reuters added that the official toxicology results from the police process will not be ready for three or four days, leaving the case still open on that front.

A rising name, a heavy surname

Maldini’s situation lands with extra weight because of who he is and what his name represents. The son of Paolo Maldini, one of the greatest defenders in football history and an icon of Milan, Daniel has been trying to carve out his own path in Serie A.

He came through at Milan, had spells with Atalanta and Lazio, and is now finding continuity at Cagliari. He already has six caps for Italy, a sign of how highly he is regarded within the national setup.

Saturday’s decisive penalty against Atalanta looked like another step in that upward curve. Instead, less than 12 hours later, he found himself at the centre of a legal and ethical storm in Milan, facing the consequences of a night that has put his judgement under fierce scrutiny.
