Daley Blind: Ajax's Best Signing of the Summer

Daley Blind has not eased his way back into Ajax. He has kicked the door down.

Signed on a free from Girona after Jordi Cruyff moved swiftly to wrap up the deal before pre-season, the former Manchester United defender has slotted straight into the heart of things in Amsterdam. No adaptation period, no gentle reintroduction. Just Blind, back in familiar colours, immediately commanding the pitch.

Reunited with his old coach Míchel, he has walked straight into the starting XI and stayed there. From the back, his voice rarely stops. He points, shouts, drags the line higher, pulls midfielders closer, demands angles for the pass. It is coaching in real time, from the centre of the storm, and inside the club the reaction has been instant: this is what they have been missing.

Hedwiges Maduro, who knows the demands of the club as a former Ajax player himself, has not tried to play it down. He has called Blind the best signing of Ajax’s summer so far and pushed the comparison as far as Jordan Henderson, a benchmark for on‑field leadership in European football.

"You can already see that he is improving players with his coaching and passing," Maduro told VoetbalPrimeur, pointing to the ripple effect of Blind’s return. With Blind behind them, Davy Klaassen and Steven Berghuis are, in his eyes, already playing better. The passes arrive earlier. The instructions are clearer. The decisions come quicker.

For Maduro, that is the crux of it. Ajax have spent a year searching for someone to grab the team by the scruff of the neck, to set standards and hold others to them. He believes Blind has stepped straight into that vacancy, the way Henderson once did at Liverpool.

"He can take on the role of Jordan Henderson," Maduro said. "That is something Ajax has certainly missed over the past year."

Ajax wanted experience, authority and a voice that carries. In Blind, they look to have found all three in one familiar figure – and he has wasted no time reminding Amsterdam exactly who he is.
