Cuca Weighs Neymar's Fitness Risk Ahead of Palmeiras Match

Santos boss Cuca has made it clear he will not take a unilateral gamble on Neymar’s fitness as the forward’s long-running feud with artificial pitches flares up again.

With a trip to Palmeiras and the synthetic surface at Allianz Parque looming, Cuca underlined that any decision on his talisman will be shared across the club’s technical staff, and with the player himself.

“I will talk to him and we will make our decisions,” Cuca told ESPN Brazil. “With him and the entire squad. We'll determine what is best to do.”

The message is simple: no hero calls, no solo decisions, not with Neymar’s history on this kind of pitch.

The Brazil star has been outspoken about artificial turf ever since aggravating an ankle problem against Atletico Mineiro last year. His verdict on synthetic surfaces pulled no punches, as he vented on social media: “It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***.”

That frustration has not faded.

Asked in the mixed zone about the prospect of playing at Palmeiras’ home ground, Neymar immediately pushed back against the idea that the decision had already been made.

“Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday,” he replied. “I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf].”

The doubt is deliberate. Neymar has been consistent about what Allianz Parque represents for him: a risk he feels is simply not worth taking.

“Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible,” he has said previously. “Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries. Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch.”

So the tension is set: a marquee player, a crucial match, and a surface he openly detests. Cuca wants a collective verdict. Neymar wants no part of plastic. The next team sheet will show which side of that line Santos are willing to walk.
