Crystal Palace vs Manchester City Preview: Season Strains and Predictions

Crystal Palace feel the strain of the season already, and the transfer window has not helped their nerves.

A sluggish start away to Everton underlined their problems. Palace never truly settled, and the performance only sharpened the focus on what might still happen off the pitch. Mark Guehi’s stint in midfield was the talking point. It gave City a slightly clunky feel in possession, a far cry from the usual seamless patterns. Somewhere, Mateo Kovacic might have been wondering how that experiment came about. Now, though, City have Ayyoub Bouaddi in the building. The youngster brings energy and promise, but he will need time to adapt to the demands of Pep Guardiola’s system and the pace of the league.

This is not shaping up as a stroll. Palace can unsettle teams, and City are still ironing out their early-season creases. The champions are likely to be pushed, forced to work through spells of pressure and awkward transitions.

Then there is Erling Haaland. He drew a blank last weekend, an event that usually serves as a warning rather than a comfort for opponents. Strikers of his calibre rarely go quiet for long. Expect his response.

Put it all together, and the balance still tilts towards City. Not a cruise, not an exhibition, but enough quality to get over the line.
