Arsenal are quietly circling as Atletico Madrid and Barcelona tear into each other over Julian Alvarez – and the Premier League champions sense this row might yet break their way.

The London club are convinced the escalating feud between the two Spanish giants could open a door. Their message is simple: when the dust settles, they will be waiting with one of the most powerful offers on the market.

Spanish outlet Sport reports that Arsenal remain firmly committed to trying to prise Alvarez away, despite a potential transfer fee that could soar to around €150 million. The money, though, is not the most complex part of this story. The real battle lies in persuading the Argentine to come back to England.

Alvarez is settled in Spain. He has just become a father, his family are comfortable, and his life off the pitch is stable. On top of that, he knows England well from his Manchester City days and has no burning desire to relive that chapter in a different shade of Premier League red.

Arsenal’s pitch: trophies and the ball at his feet

Arsenal are leaning hard on two pillars: the sporting project and their financial muscle.

On the pitch, they have presented Alvarez with a compelling case. They are Premier League champions. They have just contested a Champions League final. Under Mikel Arteta, they have built a side that dominates games, attacks relentlessly and plays the kind of football that appeals to elite forwards.

For Alvarez, that contrast matters. At Atletico Madrid he often finds himself dragged into long defensive shifts, dropping deep, chasing, tackling, and then starting attacks from positions far from goal. His quality suggests a different stage – one where he spends more time in the final third, closer to the box, closer to chances.

Arteta’s Arsenal can offer that. A front line built on movement, pressure and possession, rather than survival and counter-attacks. The feeling inside the English club is that his numbers and influence would spike in a team that attacks with their volume and structure.

The money on the table

Arsenal are prepared to put Alvarez on wages that sit among the highest in Europe. If he walks away from his long-held dream of joining Barcelona, it will only be for a financial package that reflects that sacrifice.

Atletico Madrid’s general manager, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, launched a fierce attack on Barcelona in recent days, accusing the Catalan club of “falseness” in their pursuit of Alvarez. Barcelona did not let that go. Vice-president Rafael Yuste fired back, accusing Atletico of having “crossed the red line”.

The accusations are clear. Atletico are convinced Barcelona went behind their back to make contact with the player. Barcelona insist they have acted transparently from the outset, pointing to a €100 million bid they say is still on the table.

Club president Joan Laporta has admitted the operation is increasingly difficult, but he has not closed the Alvarez file. For Barcelona, Alvarez is the only remaining option for the centre-forward role after they discarded other targets, including Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez.

That makes the standoff even more intense. Atletico refuse to budge. Barcelona refuse to walk away.

And Arsenal? They can afford to be patient.

The transfer window does not shut until midnight on 1 September. Time, for now, is their ally – and every fresh clash between Atletico and Barcelona nudges the saga closer to a breaking point that could yet drag Alvarez back towards the Premier League.
