Crystal Palace Prepare for Historic Europa League Debut with Key Players Returning

Crystal Palace are set for a night they have waited their whole history for – and they might just have two of their main weapons back in time.

Pierre Sage confirmed that Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah are in contention to return to the matchday squad for Palace’s first-ever UEFA Europa League tie, at home to Polish champions Lech Poznan on Thursday at Selhurst Park.

Sarr, last season’s top scorer, has not kicked a ball competitively this campaign after injury stalled his momentum. Palace have missed his direct running and cutting edge. Now he is close.

“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said, offering exactly the kind of update supporters wanted to hear on the eve of a historic European night.

Nketiah opened the season in the side, starting the first three fixtures, but then disappeared from the teamsheet for last week’s home games. His possible return, alongside Sarr’s, suddenly changes the look of Sage’s attacking options. Palace, who have had to make do without their two key forwards, could find themselves with a very different bench – and perhaps a different threat – when Lech arrive in south London.

Sage underlined that both players have pushed hard in training since rejoining the group earlier in the week and, crucially, look sharp.

Henderson ruled out but commits his future

Not all of the injury news was positive. Dean Henderson remains out, as does Jean-Philippe Mateta, and neither will feature against Lech Poznan. Sage is targeting the period after the upcoming international break for their return.

But just as the team sheet took a hit, the club received a major lift off the pitch. Shortly before Sage faced the media, Palace announced that Henderson had signed a new long-term contract, tying the captain to Selhurst Park until 2030.

“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, clearly delighted to have his leader locked in for the future.

The goalkeeper may not be available on Thursday, but his presence still looms large. Sage highlighted Henderson’s influence in the dressing room and on the pitch, a steadying figure as Palace step into unfamiliar European territory.

A historic night at Selhurst

Now the focus snaps back to the pitch. Lech Poznan come as reigning champions of Poland, seasoned European travellers. Palace, by contrast, are taking their first steps on the continental stage.

Selhurst Park will do the rest. Under the lights, with the Holmesdale in full voice, the club finally gets its Europa League debut. Sage knows what that demands: intensity, control, and a ruthless edge in front of goal.
