Crystal Palace in Talks to Extend Dean Henderson's Contract

Crystal Palace are moving to lock down the man who has come to define their new era. According to The Athletic, the club have opened formal talks with Dean Henderson over a contract extension, determined to secure the long-term future of their captain and first-choice goalkeeper.

From £20m gamble to undisputed No 1

Henderson arrived from Manchester United in 2023 for around £20 million on a five-year deal. Two years remain on that agreement, but Palace are not waiting for the clock to start ticking loudly.

They have watched his stature grow too quickly for that.

Since landing in south London, the 29-year-old has racked up 119 appearances in all competitions and kept 38 clean sheets. He fought through an early battle for the gloves, then slammed the door shut on any debate. Once he established himself as the clear No 1, Sam Johnstone was allowed to leave for Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £10 million move two years ago.

The message then was clear. It still is. This is Henderson’s goal.

Injury, interest and a firm ‘not for sale’

The timing of these talks is no coincidence. Henderson is closing in on full fitness after an ankle injury picked up in Palace’s final pre-season friendly. He still started the first three Premier League games of the campaign, forcing his way through the discomfort, and has missed only one match so far – the recent defeat to Ipswich Town.

While he has been working back to peak condition, his name has not drifted far from the rumour mill. Nottingham Forest, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell previously, pushed hard to bring him back during the summer window. Palace simply shut the door. Their stance was blunt: not for sale, at any price.

That refusal now feeds directly into the next phase – a new deal for the player they have built their dressing room around.

Captaincy and a growing voice

Henderson’s influence at Selhurst Park deepened again in January. When Marc Guehi was sold to Manchester City, Palace needed a new leader. They turned to the goalkeeper.

Handing him the armband underlined what had already become obvious inside the club: he is loud, demanding and respected. Teammates respond to him. Coaches trust him. Palace have rebuilt their leadership core with Henderson at the centre of it.

The decision to push for an extension is rooted not just in consistency, but in what he has done when the stakes have soared.

Henderson has been at the heart of Palace’s recent run of historic silverware. In the 2024-25 FA Cup final, he produced the decisive moment, saving Omar Marmoush’s penalty to clinch the trophy and etch his name into club folklore. He carried that momentum into the following season, helping Palace lift the FA Community Shield in 2025 and then anchoring their back line all the way to a UEFA Conference League title last season.

These were not routine clean sheets in mid-table anonymity. They were pressure games, defining nights, and he delivered.

Palace struggling, captain sidelined

All of this is playing out against a far more uncomfortable backdrop. Palace have stumbled out of the blocks in the Premier League, losing three of their first four matches and winning just once. They sit 16th, already glancing over their shoulders.

Their European schedule is about to kick in too. The club launch their UEFA Europa League campaign on Thursday at home to Lech Poznan, then travel to Leeds United on Sunday in their final match before the international break.

Henderson is expected to miss both fixtures as his recovery continues. Palace will have to navigate the start of Europe and a tricky league trip without their captain and cornerstone.

The contract talks, then, are about more than just paperwork. They are about nailing down the figure who has come to embody their ambition. If Palace are to climb away from early-season trouble and keep writing new chapters in Europe, they know exactly whose signature they need on the next deal.
