Cristian Volpato, a notable figure in Australian soccer, allegedly tested positive for cocaine after being stopped twice for speeding in Sydney, according to police reports.

The 22-year-old midfielder appeared three times for Australia during the World Cup and gained attention as a rising star after switching his international allegiance from Italy ahead of the tournament.

New South Wales police stated that Volpato was caught driving at 109 km/h, exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h, on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge around 1 a.m. last Friday. He was given a roadside drug test that reportedly came back positive for cocaine.

Authorities confirmed a second sample has been taken for further analysis. Meanwhile, Volpato’s driver’s license was suspended for six months following the incident.

Earlier the same night, at approximately 11 p.m., Volpato was stopped for speeding again, this time for exceeding the limit by over 20 km/h. Police issued him an infringement notice and administered an alcohol test, which returned negative.

Background and Career

Volpato currently plays for Italian club Sassuolo. Born in Sydney, he previously represented Italy at the Under-20 level after joining Roma in 2020 before later choosing to play for Australia internationally.
