Coventry City’s Step Forward Despite Loss to Manchester City

Bobby Thomas walked out of the Etihad with nothing to show on the scoreboard, but he saw something different in Coventry City’s 1-0 defeat by Manchester City – a platform.

Frank Lampard’s newly promoted side are three games into their Premier League return and still without a point after losses at Arsenal, at home to Hull City and now away to the champions. This, though, felt like a step towards belonging at this level.

"We approached the game differently and had a better gameplan," defender Thomas told BBC CWR. "We executed it really well and were unfortunate not to come away with a point."

Coventry adjusted. Shape, structure, responsibility – all sharpened. The Sky Blues changed formation and, this time, the roles were clear and carried out with far more discipline against one of the division’s most ruthless sides.

"You can see the formation change yourselves and we were more diligent in the roles everyone took on during the game," Thomas said. "We approached it a lot better."

The result still stings. Three games, three defeats, and the table makes for harsh reading. Thomas didn’t try to dress that up.

"Three games, zero points is not great but this was a great starting point," he admitted. "We can kick on and start getting some points from now."

Coventry’s start could hardly have been tougher: Arsenal away, Manchester City away, and a Hull side with momentum visiting the CBS Arena. Lampard’s team have been forced to learn fast against elite opposition, and Thomas knows there can be no shrinking from that challenge.

"We've had Arsenal and Manchester City away, which has been a challenge, but we have to relish it and really take on these teams," he said. "We can't come to any places and be timid and not give 100%. We have to be all-in on everything we are doing."

That attitude now has to translate into points. The defender’s message was simple: the encouragement of Manchester cannot become an excuse.

"We need to get after it and start getting some points now," Thomas insisted.

The performance at the Etihad hinted at a side beginning to understand what Premier League survival will demand. The question is whether Coventry can turn that “great starting point” into a first result before the table starts to harden around them.
