Chelsea Targets Welbeck and Henderson Amid Arsenal's Vinicius Pursuit
Chelsea’s summer rebuild is taking an unexpected turn, with the club moving towards a surprise double deal for England veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson as Xabi Alonso looks to harden the spine of his new squad with experience.
Welbeck, 35 and coming off another industrious campaign with Brighton, and Henderson, 36 and currently at Brentford, are being lined up to follow Morgan Rogers through the door at Stamford Bridge. Rogers arrived earlier in the window as the headline addition, but Alonso clearly wants more than just youthful promise. He wants players who have lived the pressure, felt the scrutiny and survived it.
If Chelsea’s business is about know-how, Arsenal’s is about shock value.
Arteta’s Vinicius gamble
Arsenal are plotting an audacious move for Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr, targeting the Brazilian as their marquee statement for the summer. The Premier League champions are preparing what would be the biggest contract in the club’s history for the 26-year-old winger, a package designed to test even Real Madrid’s resolve.
Madrid, though, are not bystanders. The Spanish giants may respond with fresh terms of their own to keep one of their key men at the Bernabeu, setting up a potential tug of war at the very top of the market.
Arsenal’s plans do not stop there. Mikel Arteta wants Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes to anchor his midfield and is also pushing to bring in another centre-back. Ezri Konsa has emerged as a serious option, while John Stones is also admired, although the England defender currently looks destined for a move to Italy rather than north London.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has made his stance clear on Guimaraes. He wants to keep his captain. Yet he has also admitted that the midfielder’s future is ultimately out of his hands, a blunt acknowledgement of the financial and contractual realities that surround Newcastle’s best players.
Liverpool’s wide search
On Merseyside, Liverpool’s new boss Andoni Iraola has wasted no time in setting out his priorities for the window. He has been explicit: the Reds “definitely need to sign a winger”.
One potential option is Bradley Barcola. The France international is understood to be open to leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer, a development that will alert several elite clubs. PSG, though, are under no pressure to sell and would demand a record fee to even consider it.
The French champions are also braced to miss out on Yan Diomande, with Real Madrid expected to win that particular chase. It leaves PSG juggling their own attacking options while clubs circle around Barcola.
United circle midfield targets
Manchester United, still reshaping their midfield, remain active in the market. The club have “reached an agreement in principle” with France international Manu Kone, according to reports in Italy, as they look to inject fresh energy and dynamism into the centre of the pitch.
Aurelien Tchouameni also stays on their radar. The Real Madrid midfielder has long been admired at Old Trafford and remains a target as United explore ways to upgrade a department that has too often looked short of control and physical presence.
From veterans potentially landing at Chelsea to Arsenal’s pursuit of a global superstar, and from Liverpool’s hunt for width to United’s midfield overhaul, the next few weeks promise a transfer window defined by big names, big fees and even bigger decisions.
