Chelsea’s Squad Numbers Under Xabi Alonso: Key Changes and Insights

Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso now has a number – several of them, in fact – and they tell a clear story about who is in his plans and who is edging towards the door.

Joao Pedro takes the No 9 – and the mantle

The headline change is up front. Joao Pedro has been handed the No 9 shirt, taking over from Liam Delap, who drops to No 12.

It’s more than a cosmetic tweak. The Brazilian’s switch underlines his status as Alonso’s first-choice centre-forward after a superb first season at Stamford Bridge: 15 goals in 35 Premier League games following his £60million move from Brighton and Hove Albion. The number now matches the responsibility.

Delap’s move out of the classic striker’s jersey hints at a different role – or reduced status – in the pecking order.

Jackson back, but questions remain

Nicolas Jackson returns from his loan at Bayern Munich and slips back into his familiar No 15. The shirt is secure. His long-term Chelsea future is not.

The club have yet to fully commit to him as a central part of Alonso’s project, and the competition at centre-forward has rarely looked fiercer.

New faces, new numbers, clear signals

From Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg comes Valentin Barco, immediately trusted with the No 4 shirt. That number belonged to Tosin Adarabioyo last season.

Tosin is still on the books, but now finds himself shunted down to No 38. For a senior defender, that is a glaring demotion and a strong indication that the club are open to moving him on to make room for further arrivals.

Other summer recruits have been slotted in with purpose.

  • Morgan Rogers takes No 17.
  • Danny Welbeck, another experienced addition, is handed No 18.

Pre-agreed signings Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda also get their place in the squad hierarchy, with No 22 and No 23 respectively. Both numbers sit in the range typically reserved for players expected to see meaningful minutes rather than academy cover.

Defence reshaped around Alonso’s ideas

At the back, the numbers underline a reshuffle. Versatile defender Marco Palestra has been given the No 2 shirt, a traditional starter’s number for a full-back or defensive all-rounder. It suggests Alonso sees him as a key piece in his back line.

Maxence Lacroix inherits No 5, vacated by Benoit Badiashile. The Frenchman is closing in on a loan move to Napoli, and his number passing to Lacroix underlines the changing guard in central defence.

Chelsea’s squad list for 2026-27 does more than confirm who wears what. It sketches out Alonso’s first blueprint: Joao Pedro as the focal point, fresh blood promoted into prime numbers, and several established names nudged towards the exit as space is cleared for a squad built in the new manager’s image.
