Chelsea 2026/27 Squad Numbers Overview
Chelsea have locked in their squad numbers for the 2026/27 campaign, and behind the usual continuity there’s a clear reshaping of status and responsibility.
The headline change sits on the back of the centre-forward. Joao Pedro has taken the number 9 shirt, stepping into a jersey that has weighed heavily on plenty of Chelsea strikers before him. He moves away from 20, with Liam Delap vacating 9 and sliding down the list to 12.
At the back, there’s a new look as well. Wesley Fofana has claimed the number 3 shirt, left open after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. That switch frees up 29, which now goes to summer arrival Pep Chavarria as he begins his Chelsea career.
Tosin Adarabioyo’s place in the hierarchy has shifted too. The defender has been given 38, while his old number 4 is now on the shoulders of another new signing, Valentin Barco. It’s a subtle but telling redistribution: the fresh faces are being dropped straight into core numbers.
Two more recruits, Marco Palestra and Maxence Lacroix, also walk straight into single digits. Palestra takes 2, Lacroix gets 5 – a shirt previously worn by Benoit Badiashile. The Frenchman, along with Axel Disasi and Marc Guiu, has not been given a squad number at all after missing pre-season, underlining how sharply the squad has been trimmed and re-ordered under Xabi Alonso.
In midfield, there’s a notable veteran arrival and a reshuffle behind him. Dario Essugo moves from 14 to 16, clearing the way for Jordan Henderson to take 14 as he begins his stint at Stamford Bridge. Club-record signing Morgan Rogers has been handed 17, the number vacated by Andrey Santos following his transfer to Manchester United.
Chelsea’s academy continues to push at the door. Reggie Watson, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Tayo Subuloye have all been rewarded with numbers – 31, 32 and 37 respectively – after eye-catching displays on the pre-season tour in Australia and Asia. The club has not confirmed whether they are formally part of the first-team squad, but the allocation hints at opportunities to come if they maintain that level under Alonso.
The spine of last season’s side remains largely untouched. Robert Sanchez stays at 1, Levi Colwill at 6, Enzo Fernandez at 8, Cole Palmer at 10, Reece James at 24 and Moises Caicedo at 25. Mykhailo Mudryk keeps 33, while Malo Gusto (27) and Estevao Willian (41) retain their places in the list.
