Chelsea Reject Leeds United Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk
Chelsea have knocked back an opening season-long loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the story is far from over.
The proposal from Elland Road fell well short of Chelsea’s demands, yet talks are ongoing and the Ukraine international is understood to be keen on the move. At 25, and after a brutal spell out of the game, Mudryk has agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match fitness and reputation.
His career stalled dramatically after a positive test for the banned substance meldonium led to a 20‑month suspension. That ban ended in July. Since then, he has been edging his way back under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making a handful of substitute appearances on Chelsea’s pre-season tour and trying to shake off the rust of nearly two years without competitive football.
Mudryk has made it clear in recent conversations that he wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has pushed Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo umbrella – and several Italian sides down the queue, even though they have registered interest.
Leeds, though, have surged to the front. Their willingness to take Mudryk on a straight loan with no option to buy has appealed to Chelsea, who want to keep control of a player they signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial £61m in 2023. The Yorkshire club would cover his wages, giving Chelsea financial relief without sacrificing long-term leverage.
It would also cap an ambitious window for Leeds. The Whites have already brought in attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. Interest in Chelsea striker Liam Delap has cooled, but their pursuit of Mudryk underlines a clear intent to add pace and cutting edge in the final third.
They are not alone in circling. Brentford, long-term admirers who tried to land Mudryk months before Chelsea won the race for his signature, have also explored a deal. The Bees wanted an option to make the move permanent, though, and that condition saw Chelsea shut the door for now. Their interest has not disappeared, but the terms have.
Coventry City have entered the conversation as well, while a switch to Strasbourg remains on the table if Premier League options collapse. Chelsea, for their part, are also weighing up sending other players to the French side, with midfielder Dario Essugo among those being considered.
For Mudryk, the next step is critical. Staying at Stamford Bridge is viewed inside the club as unlikely this season, even if it has not been completely ruled out. The winger needs minutes, Chelsea need clarity, and Leeds are pushing hardest.
The only question now is whether they can find a deal that finally unlocks a restart to a career stuck in neutral.
