Northampton Town Signs Leicester Striker Nathan Opoku on Three-Year Deal

Northampton Town have moved to sharpen their attack with the signing of Leicester City striker Nathan Opoku on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old Ghanaian arrives at Sixfields with a backstory that looks nothing like the traditional academy-to-first-team route. He joined Leicester from Syracuse University in the United States in 2023, swapping college soccer for a Premier League club and immediately being sent out to learn the European game.

Leicester parked him at their Belgian sister club OH Leuven, where Opoku found the net five times and began to shape his reputation as a powerful, adaptable forward. The next step was a season in League Two with Newport County, where he scored six goals in 30 league appearances and finished as the Exiles’ top scorer.

Chris Hogg's Perspective

For Northampton boss Chris Hogg, that unconventional path is part of the attraction.

“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age,” Hogg told the club’s website.

Three years in Leicester’s system, competitive minutes in Belgium, and a full campaign in the cut and thrust of League Two give Opoku a profile that fits the Cobblers’ needs.

“He has spent the last three years at Leicester City and enjoyed loan spells both in Europe and last season in League Two so he knows the level and he has scored goals at this level,” Hogg said, underlining the club’s belief that Opoku can hit the ground running.

Northampton have not moved on a hunch. Hogg made it clear this has been a long pursuit rather than a late scramble.

“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player.”

Now the Cobblers hand him a permanent home and a three-year window to turn that promise and experience into goals that matter.
