Chelsea Manager Search: Iraola, Alonso, Silva on Shortlist
Chelsea have moved out of the holding pattern. Initial feelers have gone in, calls have been made, and the search for the club’s next permanent head coach is now firmly under way.
After sacking Liam Rosenior last month, the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge have begun direct contact with a clutch of candidates, with a clear aim: have a new man in place well before pre-season starts in early July.
A shortlist with a clear theme
The names are high-profile and, crucially, largely free of compensation headaches.
Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner all feature prominently in Chelsea’s discussions. All four are out of work now or scheduled to be unattached by the end of the season, a detail that has not gone unnoticed in the corridors of power in west London.
Glasner is set to leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires this summer and is understood to be open to staying in England. Iraola has already confirmed he will depart Bournemouth at the end of the campaign. Silva’s deal at Fulham runs out this summer, even if the club have put a new three-year offer on the table.
No compensation. No drawn-out negotiations with rival boards. For a club desperate to reset, the appeal is obvious.
Iraola caught between Palace and Chelsea
The most intriguing subplot sits around Iraola.
Crystal Palace have moved early and hard. The Spaniard is their first-choice replacement for Glasner and the Eagles have already held extensive talks, laying out their vision and the central role they see for him at Selhurst Park.
Chelsea’s interest complicates that picture. Iraola is taking his time, weighing up his options as both Palace and Chelsea circle. At 43, he is in demand and knows it.
There is another twist. Sources indicate he is open to starting next season without a club, keeping himself free for any mid-season vacancies that might emerge across Europe. It is a bold stance, and one that could yet test Chelsea’s resolve if they want him quickly and decisively.
Glasner and Silva in the frame
Glasner, meanwhile, is heading for the exit at Palace but not necessarily for the airport. The Austrian is understood to be keen to remain in England, which keeps him firmly on Chelsea’s radar as they weigh up experience, style and availability.
Silva’s situation is different again. Fulham have offered him a three-year contract to stay at Craven Cottage, a sign of how highly he is valued there. Yet the Portuguese coach has options.
He is reported to have interest from abroad, while clubs in Saudi Arabia are also thought to be keen if he walks away from Fulham. Chelsea’s project, with its scale and scrutiny, would pose a very different challenge to the stability he currently enjoys.
Familiar faces watching from the wings
There is also a romantic strand to Chelsea’s thinking.
Former Flamengo head coach Filipe Luis and Como boss Cesc Fabregas, both ex-Chelsea players, are understood to have admirers within the club. Their names add a layer of nostalgia to a process otherwise dominated by hard-nosed considerations over contracts and compensation.
Whether sentiment can compete with the need for a proven, battle-tested head coach at this stage of Chelsea’s rebuild is another question entirely.
For now, the calls continue, the options narrow, and the clock ticks towards July.
