Chelsea Faces Leeds Without Caicedo: Injury Update

Chelsea head into Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United without Moises Caicedo once again. No disguise, no spin. He is not ready, the club know it, and Xabi Alonso has refused to push him back onto the pitch before time.

Caicedo sat out the first two games of the season, then managed just 14 minutes against Brighton before going off in clear discomfort. He missed the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal as well, and Chelsea have decided they are not repeating what Alonso called “the same mistake”. The message from the head coach is blunt: there will be no gamble on his fitness for a cup night in early September.

The injury is not regarded as “longer-term”, which offers some reassurance for the weeks ahead, but that does nothing for Chelsea’s options against Leeds at Stamford Bridge. Caicedo is out. So is Marco Palestra. Jordan Henderson remains sidelined with the wrist problem he picked up at the World Cup, while Emmanuel Emegha is also unavailable.

Alonso Draws a Firm Line

Alonso has been equally clear about Palestra’s situation. Chelsea rate him highly, but they are prepared to wait.

“He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the Premier League,” Alonso said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

The frustration is obvious. A new signing, a bright pre-season, and then a setback before a ball is kicked in the league. But Chelsea’s stance is unmistakable: there are bigger battles ahead than a midweek Carabao Cup tie, and no one is being rushed back just to make up the numbers.

Rotation on the Cards

Saturday’s home league fixture against Hull City carries more weight, so Alonso is expected to shuffle his pack. The priority is clear: progress in the cup, but not at the expense of the league schedule.

Levi Colwill, who missed the Arsenal game with a minor fitness concern, is back in full training and available for selection. He is in line to return to the starting XI. Mike Penders could come in between the posts, while Pep Chavarria and Valentin Barco are also pushing for starts as Alonso freshens up his side.

Chelsea’s predicted XI vs Leeds:

Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Neto; Barco, Lavia, Chavarria; Rogers, Palmer, Welbeck.

Straightforward Team News, Serious Intent

The injury bulletin before the Stamford Bridge tie is short and sharp:

  • Out: Moises Caicedo, Marco Palestra, Jordan Henderson, Emmanuel Emegha.
  • Doubts: none.

Kick-off against Leeds is at 8pm BST on Wednesday, September 9. The selection picture is uncomplicated: Caicedo stays in the treatment room, Alonso rotates where he can, and Chelsea walk a familiar tightrope — strong enough to chase the cup, disciplined enough to keep their eyes on the league.
