Chelsea Enters New Era as Clearlake Capital Assumes Control

Chelsea stepped into a new era on Thursday, as Clearlake Capital tightened its grip on the club and assumed full control of the ownership structure.

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, who each held a 12.83% stake, have sold their shares to the private equity group, turning Clearlake’s previous 61.5% majority into an overwhelming dominance. Power at Stamford Bridge now sits squarely with Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano.

A clear power line at the top

Speaking before Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Brentford on Friday, manager Xabi Alonso did not play down the significance of the shift.

‘I think it is an important day for the club when there is an important change in the structure of the club, new ownership,’ Alonso said at his pre-match press conference.

The Boehly era, launched with a £2.5 billion takeover in 2022, has been chaotic at times, marked by huge spending, rapid turnover and constant scrutiny. Alonso, who arrived later, chose not to revisit the turbulence. Instead, he focused on the stabilising work done in the aftermath of sanctions on former owner Roman Abramovich.

‘Thanks to the former owners for what they have done. I was not here but I know that they played an important role,’ he said, offering a measured nod to Boehly and Walter as they exit the stage.

Then he turned to the present.

‘And now that Behdad is taking more control, or almost full control, I think it is good that the main one is clear.’

One face, one line of authority. That clarity, in Alonso’s eyes, matters.

Eghbali’s project – and Alonso’s buy‑in

The Chelsea manager’s optimism is rooted in his own relationship with Eghbali. At Cobham, the Clearlake co-founder has become a constant presence and a central figure in football decisions. For Alonso, that connection began long before he walked through the doors at the training ground.

‘I have a very good relationship with Behdad; he was the one who came to Madrid to explain the project to convince me and we are working well together,’ Alonso revealed.

That trip to Spain was not a courtesy visit. It was the hard sell for a long-term vision, one Alonso now regularly refers to as a phased project.

‘As I have mentioned, this is phase one we have completed in project of the squad. It is good and now we move on together.’

Phase one, in his mind, is done. Recruitment, reshaping, laying down the first layer of what Chelsea are supposed to become under this regime. With Eghbali now holding almost total control, the alignment between boardroom and dugout looks tighter than at any point since the takeover.

The ownership story, for once, appears to be pointing in a single direction.

Joao Pedro fitness cloud hangs over Brentford clash

While the headlines swirled around the boardroom, Alonso still had a game to prepare for – and one key concern he was not ready to fully reveal.

Joao Pedro has been central to Chelsea’s bright start under their new manager. Three goals and three assists in the opening four Premier League matches have made the forward one of the early pillars of Alonso’s debut campaign.

Then came the scare. Joao Pedro withdrew from the Brazil squad with an injury issue, raising doubts over his readiness for Brentford and sending a ripple of anxiety through Chelsea’s fanbase.

Alonso, though, chose caution and a touch of mystery.

‘In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad, we are having the last training session tomorrow so no one is ruled out for us for Friday so I prefer to be cautious and we will be waiting until tomorrow to make the final decision on every player,’ he said.

No guarantees. No names. Just a hint that Joao Pedro, and others, remain in the balance.

So Chelsea walk into Friday night with a new power structure above them and a key attacker under watch. The ownership picture is finally clear. The team sheet, for now, is not.
