Charlton Athletic Secures Comeback Victory Over Derby County

Tyreece Campbell lashed home a superb second-half winner as Charlton Athletic turned the game on its head to beat Derby County and bank a sixth opening-day league victory in eight seasons.

Cutting in onto his left foot, Campbell drilled a low shot into the far-right corner, sealing a comeback that turned Derby’s long trip to London into a grim one after a turbulent week off the pitch.

The mood around the Rams had already been shaken by the collapse of a proposed takeover involving Saudi Arabia government official Turki Al-Sheikh, a saga that had hovered over the build-up to the Championship kick-off. On the pitch, though, John Eustace’s side initially looked unfazed.

They dug in, showed the familiar steel of an Eustace team, and struck first. Sammie Szmodics, sharp and composed, finished neatly after linking up well with Morris, having already gone close with an earlier effort. Derby went in at half-time with the lead and something to cling to.

Charlton, however, refused to let the afternoon drift away.

Campbell drove them forward, constantly asking questions down the flank. The winger peppered the Derby box with dangerous deliveries, one of them almost producing a spectacular goal when Dan McNamara met a cross with a fierce half-volley, only for Charlie Taylor to throw himself in the way with a superb block.

The pressure kept building after the restart. The Valley sensed it. Derby felt it.

Timothy Ouma should have levelled when he found himself unmarked at a corner, only to glance his header wide. That miss could have deflated Charlton. Instead, it sharpened them.

Soon after, Karlan Grant produced a gorgeous cross from the left, hanging the ball up perfectly. Lloyd Jones attacked it with conviction and powered his header in from close range. Derby’s resistance finally cracked, and Charlton were level.

From there, the game tilted.

Campbell, already the standout performer, took centre stage. Picking up the ball, shifting it onto his left, he snapped a precise, low strike into the right corner. Clinical. Inevitable, given the way he had tormented Derby all afternoon.

Derby, now chasing, threw what they had left at Charlton in the closing stages. Oscar Fraulo forced an excellent save from Will Mannion, who then stood tall again in stoppage time to deny Morris and protect the lead.

The Rams trudged away from The Valley empty-handed, tasting a fourth straight opening-day league defeat. Charlton walked off with three points, a comeback, and a matchwinner who looked ready to shape their season.
