Carrick Names Squad for Atletico Madrid Test in Stockholm
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has named a 23-man squad for today’s Snapdragon Cup clash with Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, a pre-season test that offers a sharp step up in intensity and a clear look at his evolving plans.
This is no token friendly. Not with Diego Simeone in the opposite dugout. Not with the mix of senior names, new faces and academy hopefuls Carrick has chosen to take with him.
Mount, Santos and Zirkzee Among Headline Names
Mason Mount is included as one of the most experienced outfield players in the travelling party, a reminder that even in pre-season, United want rhythm and responsibility from their established figures. Alongside him, summer signing Andrey Santos features in midfield, another chance for the Brazilian to show he can slot into United’s structure against a snarling, organised Atletico side.
Up front, Joshua Zirkzee is listed among the forwards, a focal point for a group of attackers that blends promise with expectation. The Dutchman’s presence gives Carrick a central reference around which the younger wide players can work.
Youth Given the Stage
The squad list underlines something else: this is a day for auditions. From back to front, the names tell a story of a club pushing its next generation into the spotlight.
- Four goalkeepers travel: Altay Bayindir, Tom Heaton, Dermot Mee and Radek Vitek. Bayindir and Heaton bring experience; Mee and Vitek bring hunger and the hope of minutes that matter.
In defence, Carrick has gone heavy on youth. Harry Amass, Dan Armer, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, Ayden Heaven and Jaydan Kamason join senior figures Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, along with highly rated Leny Yoro. It is a back line built for rotation and examination, with Maguire and Shaw expected to anchor a unit full of players trying to prove they belong at this level.
Midfield is where the balance looks most intriguing. Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher and Jim Thwaites are named alongside Mount and Santos. For the youngsters, it is a rare chance to test themselves against the intensity of an Atletico press and the physical edge Simeone’s teams never leave at home, even in July or August.
The forward line has a similar feel. Amad brings craft and experience of senior football. JJ Gabriel, Shea Lacey and Ethan Williams carry the badge of academy potential. Bryan Mbeumo adds a different profile out wide, while Zirkzee offers presence through the middle.
A Different Kind of Friendly
Kick-off is set for 14:00 BST, but the timing is almost incidental. What matters for Carrick is how this group copes with a side that treats friendlies as rehearsals, not exhibitions.
For some, this will be a tune-up. For others, it could be a turning point.
