Carlos Queiroz Returns as Ghana Coach Weeks After Resigning

Carlos Queiroz Returns as Ghana Head Coach Shortly After Resignation

Carlos Queiroz has made a surprising comeback as the head coach of Ghana, less than two months after he resigned following their exit from the World Cup. The 73-year-old initially stepped down in July, but will now lead the team during the upcoming international window.

Unexpected Return to the Black Stars

Queiroz’s first spell as Ghana's coach lasted under three months, having been appointed in April to replace Otto Addo. His resignation came after the team’s World Cup campaign ended, with the former Real Madrid manager declaring his departure from the role. Yet, the veteran coach has quickly returned to guide the Black Stars once more.

GFA Shows Confidence in Queiroz’s Leadership

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Thursday that Queiroz has accepted a new coaching contract. The GFA expressed strong faith in his ability to steer the team forward after a brief period of uncertainty.

  • Official statement: "The Ghana Football Association is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme."
  • GFA’s view: Queiroz’s extensive international experience and deep understanding of the Black Stars make him the right person to lead Ghana into this new chapter.
  • Next steps: More information about Queiroz’s mandate and the team’s upcoming schedule will be shared soon as both parties focus on building a successful future.

A Coach with Vast Global Experience

Queiroz has coached nine different national teams throughout his career. Before Ghana, he led Iran in three World Cups and took Portugal to the last 16 in 2010. Other countries under his management include South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman.

During his initial time with Ghana, Queiroz oversaw a 1-0 group stage win against Panama with a stoppage-time goal from Caleb Yirenkyi. The team then drew 0-0 with England and lost 2-1 to Croatia.

At club level, Queiroz was Sir Alex Ferguson’s trusted assistant at Manchester United, contributing to three Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League win. He also served as Real Madrid’s head coach in the 2003-04 season.

Immediate Return to Action

Queiroz won’t have to wait long before resuming his duties. The GFA confirmed his new contract begins with this month’s international window. The Black Stars aim to quickly reintegrate his tactical approach as they rebuild following the World Cup.

He now faces the task of stabilising the squad and laying the groundwork for future matches, including the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualification game against Ivory Coast.
