Cardiff City Boosted by Dylan Lawlor's Return Ahead of Charlton Clash

Cardiff City’s search for a first Championship victory of the season has been handed a major lift with Wales defender Dylan Lawlor cleared to return against Charlton Athletic.

The 20-year-old has not played a minute of the 2026-27 campaign after a knee injury, but is back in contention for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at home to the Addicks (12:30 BST).

“Dylan will definitely be available, he’s good to go,” confirmed head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, who is under pressure to turn performances into wins after four draws and three defeats from seven league games.

Lawlor back, Fish held back

Lawlor rejoined full training this week alongside fellow centre-back Will Fish. The former, though, is ready to be thrown back into the matchday squad, while Fish will be made to wait.

“Will Fish won’t be available, he’s probably another week behind so we’re not going to take any chances, but Dylan’s back fully fit,” Barry-Murphy said.

Lawlor’s return comes at the end of a relentless year. He made 43 appearances for club and country in 2025-26, forcing his way into the Wales set-up and becoming a mainstay for Cardiff under Barry-Murphy in League One. The knee problem cost him a place in Wales’ Nations League squad named on Tuesday, but not his standing at club level.

“He’s trained really well. We’ll see how he is today and tomorrow, then make a decision based on who we feel is best to start this game,” Barry-Murphy explained. “But he’s fully fit, with no issues with his knee whatsoever, and he looks great.”

Defensive reshuffle finally eases

Cardiff have been stretched at the back since stepping up to the Championship. Injuries have forced Barry-Murphy into constant reshuffles, with full-backs Perry Ng and Joel Bagan drafted inside to cover at centre-half.

The signing of Krystian Bielik from West Bromwich Albion added some steel, but the absence of recognised central defenders has been a running theme. Gabriel Osho has already missed games with his own injury, leaving the Bluebirds short in the heart of defence.

Lawlor’s reappearance – and Fish edging closer – changes the picture.

“They’re two such outstanding players and to give us that extra depth to our squad that we’ve lacked in the earliest parts of the season is going to be really important,” Barry-Murphy said. “I’m very pleased to get them back and will try to build them up gradually to make sure that they stay fit, and both players can be very important for us.”

Attacking absentees linger

While the defence finally begins to resemble something like full strength, Cardiff’s attacking options remain depleted.

Wales internationals Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies are still sidelined, as is defender Calum Chambers. Chambers is dealing with a complicated set of knee, neck and back issues, while Colwill and Davies are edging closer after ankle and hamstring problems respectively.

“We expect them to train in the middle of the international break, Rubin and Isaak,” Barry-Murphy revealed. “Calum Chambers is having a further scan on his injury this afternoon, so we’ll know more on the timescale.”

For now, the focus lands squarely on Lawlor. Cardiff need a spark, a bit of certainty at the back, and a first league win to settle the noise. The young centre-back’s return offers all three. Whether Barry-Murphy throws him straight into the starting XI against Charlton could set the tone for the Bluebirds’ next phase of the season.
