Bruno Guimaraes Set for Premier League Start Against Sunderland

Bruno Guimaraes is finally set to step out of the shadows at Arsenal.

The £75million summer signing is in strong contention for his first Premier League start when Mikel Arteta’s side travel to Sunderland on Saturday night, with the Arsenal manager ready to loosen the reins after a cautious bedding-in period disrupted by minor injuries.

Guimaraes came off the bench against Napoli in midweek and looked sharp, and this feels like the moment Arteta has been waiting for. The plan, as it stands, is simple enough: drop him in alongside Declan Rice and let that partnership dictate the tempo.

A Rice–Guimaraes axis would give Arsenal extra grip and bite in the middle of the pitch, which they will need in what promises to be a hostile, high-energy occasion at the Stadium of Light. His Newcastle United past guarantees a barrage of noise from the stands. Arteta will ignore it. Managers pick midfields for control, not popularity.

Arteta to rotate after European grind

The 1-0 win in Naples came at a cost in legs, if not in points. Arteta is expected to freshen things up.

Christos Tzolis, who had limited minutes in Europe, is in line to return to the starting XI. Kai Havertz should also come back into the side, adding height and movement further forward. At left-back, Riccardo Calafiori is tipped to replace Piero Hincapie, restoring a more natural balance on that flank.

Ben White is available despite going off late against Napoli, a relief given Arsenal’s defensive absentees. Jurrien Timber is edging closer to a proper return after his long lay-off, and there is a growing sense that he could at least make the squad.

Arteta kept his cards close but his message was upbeat. “Let's see, we have another training session [on Friday],” he said. “He's been doing really well, he's been training with us now for a few days and he looks in good shape.”

Defensive puzzle without Saliba

Cristhian Mosquera is also pushing to be involved, though he looks slightly further back in his recovery. Arteta’s assessment was similar but more cautious. “He's been doing really well,” the Arsenal manager said. “Let's see if he can get this game or the next one. It will be around that time, I think.”

One name is not in the conversation at all.

William Saliba remains out for an extended spell after aggravating a back problem on France duty earlier in the summer. Surgery was avoided, which matters for the long term, but in the here and now Arsenal must navigate a critical stretch without one of their most influential defenders.

That places more responsibility on the likely central pairing of Ezri Konsa and Gabriel, with White expected to continue at right-back and Calafiori at left-back in front of David Raya.
